Thank you, everyone for all the replies! The explanation on the false dwarves was very helpful, DanaNM, this clears things up for me.

Hazel, unfortunately I didn’t see the parents, as the rabbitry was closed to visitors due to the pandemic when we got the bunnies. I have since lost my trust in the breeder, because Nova had bunny syphilis (at 3…[Read more]

I think they are false dwarfs. Their ears look like it, and their weight is more like a false dwarf than a true dwarf. This means they are pet quilty, meaning they can’t be in shows but are still great pets. I have true Netherland and ethier a false dwarf of Netherland mix. They might still be able to do rabbit agility if you want to do that. I…[Read more]

Could be false dwarves, or it could just be that the breeder is producing mixes and advertising them as Nethies. Did you get to see the parents?

Since it doesn’t look red or very inflamed, I think this falls under the “keep an eye on it” category, rather than an urgent problem. If you notice it starts to grow or change in some other way, then have the vet take a look.

It’s not uncommon for a rabbit to have very weird poop for some times after a bad bout of GI trouble, and your bun obviously has had a bad bout of GI trouble. It does sound like your bun had bloat. Bloat is often caused by a blockage near the stomach outlet, as Dana mentioned.

Sometimes a bun that doesnt like being touched will accept it when…[Read more]

According to the animal shelter records he’s now a little over 4.

I’m starting to think the kidney finding may be significant. He’s been drinking a lot of water lately. I also thought his pee had a sediment issue and was going to ask at his next check up. A couple random times he held his urine for over 24 hours. Once that happened like a year…[Read more]

I probably posted two posts since I think the previous one didn’t have a title. If so, sorry about it and please delete the other one.

This Sunday I adopted a 5 month girl for my 5 month old boy. Bonding process has been well so far. The girl is very shy which is understandable. After a day she finally let me pet her a bit last night. And I n…[Read more]

Netherland dwarfs are heterozygous for the dwarf gene, meaning they have 1 copy of the dwarf gene, and one copy of the “normal” gene. If they have two copies of the dwarf gene the babies will not survive, so all dwarfs that survive are heterozygous. This means that in their litters, there will be some babies that get two normal genes, known as…[Read more]

We weigh them every week, Nova is around 1700 grams (10 months) and Ginki is 1500 grams (8 months). The person we bought them from guaranteed that they won’t be more than 2 kilos. Nova’s weight does increase only very slowly, but I suspect he won’t be much bigger.

I never heard of a false dwarf before. Does that mean they are not of the…[Read more]

Thank you for the vibes! It’s so hard knowing he had to ride in the car for 2 hours in all that pain, but so glad I decided to take him. I’m also sad for his partner Ruby. I couldn’t take her there so she is here alone and confused right now.

Hopefully in the hospital they can find some answers, otherwise will have to do some follow ups to rule…[Read more]

    Poor Elmer 🙁

It’s really hard to say whether the new symptoms are a side effect of the stasis, or indication of an underlying issue that caused the stasis. As you know stasis can be a symptom, and often more serious issues present like stasis at first and then progress rapidly. Things like liver torsion or a looped gut can also present like…[Read more]

We all know bunnies always seem to always want to eat things they aren’t supposed to…

Cooper is OBSESSED with eating tape and stickers off of cardboard boxes. Whenever we get a package delivered he goes right to it! It must be considered a rare bunny delicacy!

What is your bun’s favorite “forbidden fruit”? Figured it would be fun to see if…[Read more]

Nova’s ears definitely are too big proportionally to be a Netherland Dwarf. Ginki is veering towards that as well. They are likely mixes who have the snout appearance of a Nethie, but will surpass the typical size/weight we’d expect from a Nethie.

And @Bam thanks for the video. I actually found it yesterday when I was trying to research what to do (after it was too late). Elmer is a very difficult to handle bun and absolutely hates me holding him, but just need to do it next time.

Thank you both, it’s so great to have this resource. I thought he was perfectly healthy and still sort of in shock.

I agree with both and a learning on my part, I definitely will take action sooner when a treat is refused. Getting the gas drops in him earlier/ getting to vet sooner probably would have made a difference.

At this point the focus…[Read more]
