Bam replied to the topic Managing Hock Sores in the forum DIET & CARE 2 years, 6 months ago
When my bun got sore hocks I wrapped his feet with self-adhesive vet wrap lined with his own fur. It’s important that the lining is rabbit fur. Cotton pads or lamb’s wool etc isnt soft enough.
Dont let the fur lining protrude out from the wrap, or the bun might feel inclined to pull the fur out (my rabbit did that before I realised).
I recommend…[Read more]

Bam replied to the topic Helping with weight gain in the forum DIET & CARE 2 years, 6 months ago
As for rolled oats, I started out with like half a teaspoon. Then I gradually increased the amount to 1 tablespoon per day, divided up into 2-3 servings. I gave him about 6 sunflower seeds (shelled) and 3-4 pumpkin seeds per day. Seeds are rich in fat, and fat stimulates gut movement. Good quality vegetable fat contains essential fatty acids which…[Read more]

It seems he needed you and you needed you 🙂 Sometimes the Universe makes these things happen! It doesnt sound like he needs an emergency vet visit. He’s eating and pooping and peeing. His current diet seems fine.
I’m very sorry you lost your rabbit.

Oh wow! What timing!
If he’s handling the pellets well you could increase them gradually. Since he’s likely young then getting extra pellets is OK, and since he was malnourished they will help him get some weight back on.

Here’s a recipe! You basically make the CC into a thick paste and then dry them out at low temp in the oven: http://chinchilla-resources.com/chinchilla-resources/critical-care-cookies.asp

Bam replied to the topic I believe my rabbit is having dental issues and has developed an abcess in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 2 years, 6 months ago
It is common for burst or opened abscesses to scab over so the bun caretaker needs to open it up daily or even twice daily. This is obv disgusting, but perfectly in order. Rabbits are “primitive” animals, meaning that in the wild, they dont live long lives, so their major “aim” is to get as many babies as they possibly can during their short…[Read more]

Definately! Fingers crossed… As of last night I could see that the area was still oozing a bit so good thing it’s still continuing to flush itself out, I’ve been putting warm guaze on it 2x a day just to make things a bit easier and to encourage more of the pus and germs to come out (also this way there will be no scab the vet would have to…[Read more]

Thank you for taking this bun in!
My first thought is he was starving when you found him. If you feel him over, like you seem to have done, you’ll find he’s skinny, with protruding hip bones. It’d be a good idea to weigh him 2 per week (I weigh my buns in a bowl on normal kitchen scales) and write down his weight. That way you can make a weight…[Read more]

Poor baby, thank you for rescuing him!
I think you are doing the right thing by not giving too much too fast. Is he eating his hay? Is he also peeing a lot? It’s possible this is a response to being hungry and thirsty for too long :(, but I would recommend having him checked out by a vet to see if there is anything going on with him.

Bam replied to the topic wood stain in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 2 years, 6 months ago
I doubt it’d hurt your bun if it’s out of chewing range. Maybe if your room is very small and you keep both door and windows closed, but then it wouldnt be quite safe for you yourself to sleep there.
Could you perhaps place it outside for a day or two (like on a balcony) to air it out properly?

I got this wooden crate I want to put on my wall and I used some wood stain on it. Its been a couple days but it still has a little bit of a smell to it. Does anyone know if this could hurt my rabbit? I know strong smells like perfume or candles can harm them so I just want to make sure before I put it in my room with her. TIA 🙂
