I don’t think so. I’ve had bunnies that had no stasis episodes and they lived very long lives.

I keep reading people claiming that stasis is inevitable for all buns and I’m so confused. Including current buns, I’ve been owned by 10 buns over the years and none have ever had stasis. There was one bun that had stasis like symptoms but it was not actually stasis, but a very rare bacteria shutting down his body. There’s been buns that poo’d…[Read more]

When I was a bunny noob, I didn’t realize the importance of spaying buns. I had a couple of girls who lived between 8-9 years old, but I’m not entirely sure if they died of cancer or not (although I suspect it in at least 1).
Like LBJ said, you may want to talk to your vet to see what they think of still doing the surgery for your girls. 🙂

Some unspayed rabbits do live longer. The chance of reproductive cancer is high, but that doesn’t mean all unspayed rabbits will die from cancer. You will read different ranges online, and this is due to differences in breeds. Some breeds are more prone to cancer than others so the stats you see are often averages. If you have a good vet now, I…[Read more]

Posting this here since House Rabbit Q and A doesn’t seem to be working for me.
I have not been on here in a few years, but I have two bonded Lionhead and Jersey Wooly mixes who are 5 years old, 6 in April. I have had them since they were several weeks old and did not get them spayed because I was younger and didn’t fully understand, didn’t have…[Read more]

My boy slept a lot as he got older. It was always so sweet seeing him passed out in the hay. I think some of it can be age-related, but if you think Nellie needs a higher dose of pain meds then you could look into that to see if that changes anything.

Hey. I had another question and thought I’d ask here as its very related to the topic title but about Nellie… As you can see from previous she had a good health check with an exotics specialist who suggested both Glenn and Nellie were in very nice health for their age (no xrays or ultrasounds Ofcourse) Nellie is around 9 or 10, she does show her…[Read more]

How is he doing now? Serve him his daily greens freshly rinsed and wet, if he gets greens. Encourage moving around. A light tummy rub can be beneficial.

Does he happen to be shedding? Perhaps he ended up ingesting too much fur while grooming and it caused a bit of a blockage?
You might also try tummy rubs to help get things moving again. Sometimes gently massaging their tummy will help move any gas or whatever through.
Is he drinking water ok?

I agree with the others, but just wanted to mention bunnies can be allergic to hay/hay dust. Sometimes switching hay (Timothy to orchard grass or something) can help. Unfortunately, it sounds like there may be a more serious issue going on since its a recurring issue. I’m so sorry to hear about your poor bun(and your poor finances!)

Mucus is a sign of inflammation in the GI tract. It can be caused by a lot of things. It certainly doesn’t hurt to treat for EC. Panacur is well-tolerated by most bunnies. However, when the bunny is very geriatric, they may not respond as well to the treatment if it is EC. When they are old, their immune system isn’t as good. So things that have…[Read more]

Many thanks for your answer. I also just noticed clear/whitish mucus in the small amount of poop he produced. He has never had this (mucus) in his entire life.
I understand that this can be related to an infection or parasites, possibly even E. cuniculi. The vet ruled out E. cuniculi because he does not have a head tilt, but from what I’ve r…[Read more]

Rabbits need a higher dosage than a dog. Dosage can be as high as 1.5 mg/kg for acute pain, but typical (i.e., maintenance) is 0.3-0.6.
My bunny was eating like it was going out of style. I could see a bunny that had stomach pain not wanting to eat, but arthritis doesn’t necessarily prevent them from eating as long as they can reach the food.
As…[Read more]

I’m hoping that he continues to eat hay and poops more overnight. His last poop was about 7-8 hours ago and it was about 20 of them, but they were all small, hard, misshapen. I am hoping he’s just had a GI slow down and will bounce back and start pooping again. I’m just glad that he pooped at all today, but unsure what could have caused this as…[Read more]

He is nearly impossible to syringe feed anything to, so he hasn’t gotten any simethicone or critical care, but he has eaten a pretty decent amount of hay today. His last poop was about 7-8 hours ago and it was about 20 poops that were all small and dry, but he did poop today, so I guess that is good news! I just can’t figure out why he would have…[Read more]

Thanks a lot for both of your answers, I really appreciate it 😊
We just came back from the vet. He received an injection of Metacam, and I was instructed to give him 1.5 mg orally per day. Do you also use Metacam (meloxicam) which is for dogs for your rabbits, and if so, do you use a similar dosage?
She mentioned that he has pain in his front…[Read more]

If he’s pooping then there isn’t an obstruction. At least not a full one. Small, misshapen poops are a sign that things have slowed down. But he is eating something and he is pooping, so that is a good sign. Not great, but not full on panic mode either. Have you tried giving him gas drops (simethicone)? Or any other supportive care?

Hi all!
I have a 6 year old male neutered lionhead rabbit named Mickey. He has experienced a few bouts of stasis in the past, but it’s been a long time since he has had one. His diet is free choice Timothy hay and 1/4 cup Oxbow Adult rabbit pellets per day. He is free roam in a large spare bedroom. No recent changes to his diet or e…[Read more]

Considering the age, I agree discussions around pain/joint-relief medications is beneficial. Even without a surgical hx, an 11yo rabbit is bound to have relatively normative, age-related arthritic and joint discomfort.
I have two senior rabbits– one is a 3lb netherland dwarf, and the other is a 7-8lb mix of -generic rabbit who knows-. The…[Read more]
