You’re doing great!
I think I remember a study that says rabbits can safely be on meloxocam for 28 days. This doesn’t mean that meloxicam is unsafe for even longer use, it just means there are no studies on longer treatment courses. Many of us here have given high doses of meloxicam for longer, it’s not uncommon in chronically ill or very old…[Read more]

Charlie has been on Meloxicam 1.9mg for 19 days now. She was on it pre surgery for 10 days and this would be day 10 post surgery. She weighs about 7lb.
I asked her vet about the safety of long term Meloxicam during her visit on Tuesday, expressing concern she had been on it 15 days already. She said rabbits can safely take Meloxicam for 23 days (…[Read more] -

It does seem safer to wait with the penicillin since the vet is reluctant to give it. Maybe keep a close eye, look closely for swelling, monitor her appetite and ability chew, obv poop quality as well.
There are ppl here who have very successfully given sub q penicillin to their buns – moderator Wick for example. I have never done it, I’ve only…[Read more]

I made it a routine. Meds with all the cleaning done on the bathroom countertop; no bun is familiar with the countertop so it’s always been easier for me to bring bun there for serious issues as they do not move as much.
And then additional meds, mixed with pellet mush or critical care (and/or something bun actually likes to eat) are given after…[Read more]

It sounds mean, but teaching them to sort of “give in” to the select medication/grooming windows is important. It’s actually not bad that bribing with food doesn’t work because when owners become dependent on that, they run into difficulty when it no longer works!
Whatever method you use, make sure you are committed and follow through. I…[Read more]

This morning Charlie had her first post op check from having her back lower left molar pulled and teeth filed. Vet was very pleased with her progress. She’s eating and doing well.
Her culture came back to see what bacteria was in the abscess. The only thing it showed (can’t remember name) was what vet said is the normal bacteria she has in her…[Read more]

I’m glad you have Nova. You might see her behaviour change considerably now when she’s an only bun and your her human. I’ve seen that happen, my Bam, transformed into a completely “new” bun after his co-bun passed. He became outgoing and and very affectionate.
I think you’re right in that the most important thing for Mischa was to be in the…[Read more]

I have not seen this personally. But, to me, it sounds as though she is getting a feel for her “new” teeth. After all, she was probably in pain for a while and suddenly the painful parts are gone and her mouth feels different.

Charlie had dental surgery on Wednesday.
Once vet was in her mouth it was discovered her lower left back molar needed pulled due to infection. Fortunately it had not accessed or spread. Her other teeth were filed down as needed. She is doing very well today… not quite 72 hours post surgery.
The question I have, hoping maybe somebody has e…[Read more]

Thank you, Bam. Logically I think I understand that we didn’t have many options and there’s no way to know if the outcome would have been any different, but of course my broken heart is telling me otherwise. I’m trying to take some comfort in the fact that she was at home with familiar smells, and her sister was with her and got to say…[Read more]

I’m so glad to hear that worked better! I always had luck with it, so I figured it was worth a shot. And yes, they would actually swallow instead of letting it ooze out of their mouths. So much better than trying to burrito them!

Thank you, that’s really good advice!
So usually I would pick her up and set her on my lap on a large cushion while on the sofa and medicate there. Perhaps you are right and maybe the whole sofa and pillow are not making her feel secure! I tried floor medicating today and it actually went better, she was able to move away for a quick break couple…[Read more]

SuperNova replied to the topic What's up with the hay lately? in the forum DIET & CARE 1 week, 2 days ago
I’m quite late to the thread but figured I would chime in for current/future readers: I also feed Orchard Grass, and I felt like the past year or so I was getting a lot of brown hay, a lot of dust and a lot of some other pieces I didn’t recognize in the Small Pet Select boxes. Could very well have been a mix of Alfalfa and/or Timothy in there but…[Read more]
