Hey
Is it common practice to dose a bun recovering from gas with metacloprimide and cisapride + Loxicom in one medication sitting?
Nellie has had a bad bout of gas the last week that we were initially successfully treating with cisapride and Loxicom (already perscribed for arthritis) When I was tapering her off after 3 days to one daily dose we woke up to her gassy and refusing food around 8 hrs after her last medication dose, so it appeared she had relapsed or we were just unlucky and she had gas again as her meds were wearing off. So back to the vet we go. The vet (not our usual exotics) wanted to attack it aggressively, which is fair and perscribed metacloprimide 3x daily at a high dose of 1mg per kg and her cisapride about 0.62mg per dose. She perked up after the vet visit and began to eat, very picky but eating nonetheless. We’ve lowered to x2 daily metacloprimide and x2 daily cisapride due to handling stress. Currently I am giving them 2-3 hours apart, so she is being handled 4x a day, which is quite stressful for a 10 Yr old with anxiety, she’s doing okay and started eating hay again last night and was very perky this morning but in effort to reduce handling stress the vet said to just give her all 3 meds at the same time twice a day.
Does that sound like normal practice and a safe dosing regime or would you seek a second opinion? She was a great vet but not a Exotics and I am just worried this all sounds a bit overwhelming to an old girls system especially x2 prokinetics at once if she’s actively eating etc. but I could be wrong! I may try to reduce to one prokinetic tomorrow (day 4 since gas relapse) if she is still perky.
I understand medical advice needs to be from a vet but if anyone has given similar treatments to their buns and knows if giving meds all at once is well tolerated that would be helpful to know. Thanks!
