My bun Domino has ALWAYS been soooo bad at chewing my baseboards! I’ve tried butter spray and even a peppermint spray. The past 2 years we’ve lived in an apartment and resulted to covering them with fabric to keep him from ruining them.

I’ve recently moved into a house (he’s done pretty well getting situated). He’s been fine until recently he’s decided to chew on our baseboards🤦🏼‍♀️. He has tons of boxes, chew logs, can run between 2 different rooms, and cups to throw. Butter spray not working again.

any suggestions?? I really don’t want to have to fabric my baseboards all over my new house 😅

Some rabbits are just chewers and it’s hard to get them out of that. My own approach is not to try… it’s good for their teeth anyway. 😛

Are the baseboards simple style? Is it the tops he gets to?  At home, Ive used  hard plastic strips to cover mine. They’re just held in place with blue-tak! I went to the trouble of sectioning some rectangular PVC pipe to get the right profile.  It was a messy process… If I was to start over, I would have simple bought these angled pieces (sometimes sold as wall paper corner protectors) and stuck those on the top part.

          Corner protectors

Regarding his tendency to chew, it does sound like he’s always been that way..  If it were a new habit and he was really obsessive about it – Id be concerned there was something troubling him.

Does he have any “furniture” that’s his? Like activity table, cat tower or wooden hidey box?  Maybe you could use cable ties to fix some 2×4 lengths of wood to a cage/crate/pen side so he can chew on that instead?

You’ve gotten some great advice from jerseygirl, but wanted to add a trick that worked for me.  My vet gave me this tip.   Rub some ivory soap (just from the bar, not wet) on the areas you don’t want chewed.  This has worked like a charm for my own chewing monsters in the past.   I have seen them sniff, and even attempt to chew, but then….”yuck” and they stop.  However, there IS a chance your bunny will still chew and the soap will NOT be good for digestion, so I strongly suggest you watch carefully how they react to it.  And don’t let them have access until you are sure they won’t be chomping on soap laced baseboards.   Check out our our bunny proofing section on this site as well.

            Keep us updated!
