Hey guys, a few days ago I had to put my baby to sleep after a very long week of trying my best to care for him. A week before it happened he developed weepy and red eyes and stopped eating. Upon taking him to the rabbit hospital, they said that he had an infection and gave him antibiotics and critical care to help his appetite. He appeared to improve for a few days but all of a sudden a few days later he was lethargic again and having trouble breathing. We rushed him to a vet ER who gave him oxygen and found that all of the glands in his body were enlarged, especially around his neck which is why he couldn’t breathe. He began to rapidly deteriorate and it was devestating to watch him struggle. The vets couldn’t determine any cause for the swelling in all of his glands and as antibiotics were not working, we decided the best thing would be to put him to sleep. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make but it broke my heart seeing him struggle to breathe, considering no diagnosis could be made. I keep wondering whether it was my fault that he fell so ill as I only had him for two weeks. I’m just wondering if anyone else has come across this sort of illness before and if they know what it is, or if it’s even curable. Thank you.

I can’t give you any answers to what caused your bunny to get sick (was his name Bo?), I can only say how sorry I am. It’s heartbreaking to hear of the loss of any bunny. The guilt becomes a big part of the loss, but it is obvious you did everything you could to help him. Even though you only had him for two weeks, that is enough time to have fallen in love with him. It is only natural you will be hurting.

          Sleep tight little bun.

I’m very sorry that you lost your little bun. I don’t know what took him -baby buns are very fragile and lots of things can go wrong. The swollen glands (lymph nodes?) makes me think of tularemia, but I’m certain your vets would have said so if there was suspicion of tularemia. It’s not very common in the USA. It’s mostly spread by mosquitos.

You didn’t do anything wrong, you could not have caused this. It’s likely that he had whatever it was with him when he came to you. You did all you could, you took him to the animal hospital and they tried to save him. I’m so sorry they couldn’t.
