        Hi,

I am a little confused… In the last 48 hours Monty has done considerably less poops than usual. However, the poops he has done are large, round and healthy. He is happy, he is eating a lot of cecotropes and this is nothing like the stomach issues we have had with him before. He is eating a little less at the moment, but his appetite is not down (he still wants treats and vegetables and pellets, just less hay!) We had put this down to the rise in temperature (we live in the North of Scotland where it has only just started getting above 20C, but these are high temperatures for the area).

I just wondered… Does warmer weather cause bunnies to poop less? Like I say, he is doing some, just very few, and a lot of cecotropes (all of which are being eaten). I feel completely neurotic because nothing seems wrong, there are NO indications like we have had before when he has felt unwell. So… Any ideas? ?

(Our vets are not open tomorrow. It is a 40 minute drive and it is hot. We are reluctant to do that to him without cause.)

If a bun eats less hay, there will be less poop. Hay has lots of indigestible fiber that gets pooped out. Rabbits don’t like hot weather and that could be why he’s eating less hay. It takes a bit of effort to eat hay, and on hot days, buns don’t want to do much. Dogs can refuse food altogether when it’s very warm and humans as a rule don’t want to eat huge meals when it’s hot. During a heatwave animals and humans don’t have to eat to keep warm plus we tend to be less active.

That the poop is still big and well formed is great. You’ll have to keep an eye so he hasn’t cut back on hay because of a dental issue (pain when grinding hay between his inner teeth).

Make sure he drinks enough and give him a cool water bottle etc to snuggle up to if he wants to.
