I just recently heard about probiotics for bunnies from this board, but I can’t get the search feature to work to learn more.

I’m interested in them because my bunny is suffering from cecal dysbiosis that’s been going on for some time. It doesn’t seem to be diet related. Since it started we’ve run the gamut between only hay to hay and lettuce and working in some baked Oxbow treats with no discernible difference. The other day we added in a banana at lunch because it was more like her old diet before she got the problem and we aren’t sure whether it made it worse or not. She did suddenly start doing the cecals during the day when she had been doing them at night and they might have been slightly more puddingy. Maybe. It was hard to tell. We stopped giving the banana to her just in case and she’s working back up to doing it at night again… weird.

I think it is coming from one or all of the following: e cuniculi, antibiotics, and stress. We’re trying to decide what to do for her next since diet has not fixed the problem and I would be very grateful if I could hear more of you guys’ stories about using probiotics.

I am concerned with hopefully correcting the cecal dysbiosis, and if we can’t do that, at least alleviating that nutrition problem that people talk about.

Thank you in advance for interest in my question.

Apple cider vinegar with the mother has good bacteria and enzymes for rabbit digestion. You add about half a teaspoon to a bowl of water. So a really small small amount. It will also make the pee not smell.

There are many probiotics available, Benebac is a common type that has some of the bacteria that are naturally found in the rabbit gut. In Europe there are other brands, Protexin is a British brand. I use Protexin for my dysbiosis-prone Bam, but it’s currently not available in the USA I think.

Apple cider vinegar is sold in grocery stores, among other the types of vinegar like balsamico and white wine vinegar that you use for making sallad dressings etc. Apple cider vinegar has beneficial uses for humans too.

^ as bam says, grocery store. Read the labels and you’ll find the ones that specifically say “with the mother”!

Yeah, I didn’t realize you could buy vinegar with the mother. Thought you had to grow or make your own or something. Thanks. I’ll also look into the Benebac stuff so I have options.

If it’s hard to find, try a health food store.
