So it’s been over a month since I went to the shelter and put her on hold, but I finally got to bring my new girl home. I’ve decided on Dulce de Leche (Dulce for short) as her name, I’m pretty sure she’s a cinnamon, so I thought the sweets-themed name was appropriate. They told me she was about a year old. I’ve already put myself on the waitlist for bonding services so hopefully, she’ll be looking for a friend in the fall.

I left her in her carrier for a bit to get all her stuff set up, and within about 5 min she was already rattling the bars and demanding to be let out. So far things are going pretty well, she’s figured out how to get to all the levels in her cage and is exploring the living room. She did manage to pee on my rug, so litter training is currently in progress. She generally seems to pee and poo in one spot so I’m hoping if I can convince her to do it in the box she should be pretty good. She’s been really active, tons of binkies and does settle down and let me pet her on occasion. Here are a few pictures I’ve gotten so far.

        Here’s my favorite so far

I kept myself busy during the month between meeting and adopting her hacking an Ikea tv cabinet into her cage. I’m pretty proud of how it came out, though she did immediately expose some design flaws. The main one being that when she catapults herself at full speed and slides into the back of the cage or is trying to binky inside she can knock the back out since it is just a metal sheet sitting in the pre-made grooves. She has also decided that she really enjoys shoving herself under the cage, and either sleeping there or scootching herself out a few feet from where she started and sprinting around the room.

Here are some pictures before I got all of her stuff and her.

I actually tiled, grouted, and caulked all the flooring so I am hoping that any spills will be easy to clean and have metal on any exposed wood ledges so she can’t chew. The main issue I’m having now is a how to hang a water bottle in it. I’m thinking if I secure the back more I can put it there. This thing took soo much longer than anticipated, but I think it was worth it.

Wick’s hutch is also built similarly (his is a dresser mod). I highly suggest putting a panel or some sort of shield from the floor up a few inches against the back so pee doesn’t hit your wall. Also, no need to hang a bottle. Water bowls are much better.

After a month or two, I highly recommend taking a flashlight and checking the underside of the hutch. When urine sits on a spot overnight or for a few hours, it does a darn good job at finding any gaps in sealing. If you notice the underside is soaked anywhere, even a little, definitely revisit the area, clean it, and review it’s sealing.

I have a water bowl for her currently it’s just sitting outside the cage. When I’m gone I’m surrounding the cage with an x-pen to giver her some more space, but making sure she can’t go searching for some tasty cords. I’m just a little paranoid about her turning the bowl over in the cage. She managed to turn over her food bowl already, but it was pretty light. Do you think with something heavier she wouldn’t be able to dump it out?

And thanks for the tip about the bottom and the lip. I don’t think my landlords would appreciate rabbit pee on the walls.

She is very pretty! And just look at that adorable face!

Plus she has a very pretty hutch too, very well done

              Welcome to the forums!

Edit: Didn’t see your post about tipping the water bowl! I use a big dog cemetric bowl, my buns can’t ever toss it over, and Acrylic in perticular likes to toss all her bowls and she hasn’t managed to and she’s a rather large angora mix

                Hey Mel!
Love want you’ve done for dulce; her home is lovely. Super luxurious and located in the family room means she gets lots of social time also means you have comfy seating to watch Binkies

I can’t see in the pictures; how does she get upstairs? Is it a hop up or a ramp?

Dulce reminds me of a Rex because of body shape (what breed of beautiful bunny is she?). I hope she has dense fur on the bottoms of her paws; my rex was developing bald spots on the bottom of her feet (pre sore hocks) in spite of the cushioned linoleum I used inside her condo. I had to line her house in flannel fabric and towels to soften/give traction (among a couple other things) to help her grow her fur back.

I’m with Wick about the water bowl… much better for their health. It’s been found that while drinking from a bowl, vs a bottle, rabbits drink more; which helps dilute possible bladder sludge (too much calcium in the diet). Get a heavy “crock” bowl, I use a 4 inch width “human” bowl. It’s baking safe and heavy enough that it would take a fully motivated tantrum to knock it over.

She’s looks so sweet! I love her set up. It’s so neat to see someone else with an awesome Ikea hack bunny hutch! I tiled mine too!

It’s just a hop up, it took her a day to figure it out but now she seems pretty proficient.

I’ve tried to give her towels and t-shirts to play with/lay on but she immediately pees on them. I’m also a little paranoid leaving fabric with animals since my dog died of a bowel obstruction from eating a towel at a petsitter’s house. Though his mission in life seemed to be eating inedible objects, so my fear might be unfounded. Are rabbits a little better about not eating fabric? I have grass mats for her to lay on, but I wonder if those are comfy enough.

I gave up on the water bottle, given her choice she immediately went with the bowl. Potty training is going pretty well. She only uses her box in the cage and hasn’t peed on anything else either. She will try and poo in a corner when I let her have free run of the living room, but since I’m here when that happens I usually shoo her back to her cage or a box.

Here are some more pictures too

                        Her going under the cage

That bum in the air pic cracks me up. Dulce is simply lovely, and her fortress of solitude is awesome – way to DIY!

Ah Yes… The peeing on soft surfaces; I hear that’s a thing for some bunnies.

It’s not unheard of for rabbits to ingest fibres. I hear more stories about rabbits tearing up and eating carpet. Flannel/fleece is popular as rabbit bedding as it doesn’t “give threads” the way a cotton knit or weave would but – pee….

(She is a looker for sure. Very sweet)
