I would like to introduce Matilda — the nicest “mean” bunny ever!
Matilda was born December 21, 2012, the day the world was “supposed to end” (remember that Mayan calendar fiaso?) but I say it’s the day my world began. I got her from the Ohio House Rabbit Rescue in (I think) May 2014. I had just lost my 23lbs Flemish Giant after she got scared in surgery for a broken leg and had a heart attack, so I still had a soft spot for the big ones. Matilda was a Flemish Giant mix that had a sign on her cage that said “WARNING: I BITE” and I thought to myself “wow, with a disclaimer like that, no one is even going to consider adopting her. Let’s see what this is all about.” The rescue keeps their rabbits in x-pen cages so you can get in and interact with them, so I insisted I go in. It was quite the daring move given her track record of biting most of the people that volunteered there, but if Matilda had any chance of being chosen, someone had to take the risk! I went to see her a few times a week for a couple weeks until I had all of the funds and supplies ready and she never bit me. Until the day I was taking her home lol. I had gotten to know the volunteers at the rescue so well and they were so thankful somebody would give Matilda a chance that they even let me take a couple x-pens and flooring with me for free!
She had a reputation for being a mean bunny and biting everyone, but she didn’t bite me until I took her as my own (I attached a picture of an example of the damage). And let me tell ya, she bit me A LOT. And it hurt. There was a lot of blood thanks to Matilda’s big mouth, and this lasted for many, many months. She eventually realized I loved her and I wasn’t going to give her away like everyone else did. She had been bounced around from place to place since no one would put up with her long enough. These days, she’s the nicest bunny ever! And not just to me, but to everyone. She was a sweet girl all along and unconditional love just gave her a reason to show it, I guess.
