› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › WELCOME ! › What breed is my bun?
I became a first-time bun mom about 10 days ago when I adopted my lovely 8lb 2-year-old Toki from the RSPCA. On their website and on all the forms they gave me, he is listed as a silver fox breed. But after googling and seeing that silver foxes look very different to my bun, I got confused. Did the RSPCA get his breed wrong ? Or is my bun just a silverfox in disguise?
I’ve been telling everyone he is a silver fox and I don’t wanna look silly ![]()
Here are some pics of my boy

Edit: Also, hello everyone from me and Toki
Sorry this is a horrible introduction!
Hello! Welcome and congrats on your gorgeous bun! <3
He looks like a Giarra breed to me… (sorry don’t know the name in english >___< do google it, they look very similar!)
He looks like a Silver Marten to me.
He looks like a Rex Rabbit to me lol
He could be a mix of something he’s very beautiful
Agree with pongo! Rex rabbit to me, maybe a mix? Not sure but definitely Rex markings
He’s no rex, his has a normal length coat
He’s not a silver fox, well perhaps he could be with some incorrect coat colours. But the fact that he has a tan patch behind his ears instead of a white or silver patch means his colour is black otter. Which is not something present in Silver Fox or Silver Martens. Often RSPCA and similar organisations are guessing at breeds, but don’t actually know. They pick something which looks like the rabbit and go with that as their breed. I couldn’t tell you his breed, but he may be a mix of silver fox or silver marten with something else. Or he could just be a big mixed breed with a beautiful black otter colour ![]()
Hello and welcome. He is beautiful. And… hide him well, as I’m coming to bun-nap him…..
A “Silver Fox Cross” is a cool title to give him…..
Do you know what his story is?
Azerane! I should get you to tell me what Monte is or at least an idea of what someone with knowledge on breeds thinks he is
I agree silver fox cross sounds like a mysterious name… also reminds me of what you’d call an older great haired man! Haha
You should just change his name to Schofie (Skofy – Philip Schofield) and be done with it !!! ![]()
He’s cute ![]()
I think he looks a lot like the silver fox ones in this link https://www.rarebreeds.co.nz/silverfox.html
Thanks everyone for your inputs
Could he really be a possible Rex? Don’t they have to be treated slightly differently to non-Rexes, like groomed more often? I’d hate to be doing something incorrectly because I didn’t realise he was a Rex (not that he is a Rex, but just in case).
Silly me, I didn’t even consider that he could be a mix! Before posting the topic I thought he could be a silver marten myself, but wasn’t too sure. But now Azerane makes me think he’s not a silver marten so I’m very confused as usual
To me he definitely seems to have some silver marten in him somewhere though!
For Vienna: We don’t know much about his background except that he was owned for about a year by someone who had too many rabbits to look after, and he came in to the rspca centre with 6 other buns. He’s quite timid and runs away if my hand goes to stroke him.
Also, Oakley and Boston’s Mama, He does look a lot like those bunnies! But he only has very few white tips on his fur, not nearly as much white as those buns. I don’t know if it matters, but his belly is totally white, which is bordered by a chestnut colour. He’s a really soft and gorgeous bun, I’d just love to know what he is ![]()
Here are some more pictures in case someone sees something that could help identify him

As you can tell he loves snuggling up to my chair ![]()
He is not a Rex. He doesn’t have the short, velvety Rex fur nor the short curly Rex whiskers. Many rabbits are a mix. I had posted before that I thought he looks like a Silver Marten, and I still think that, but he may be crossed with another or other breeds.
If your hand always has a yummy treat or pellet in it, he’ll soon start to stay put when your hand gets close to him.
Then start putting your hand a little further away from him so it is he who comes and inspects your hand. And his automatic reflex will learn to trust your hand ![]()
I just wanted to pop in and say that your bun is absolutely adorable!! I’m sure he’s found a good home with you. I have a netherland dwarf with the same coloring, but much smaller of a guy of course!! ![]()
Thanks tobyluv for clearing that up
If he is part silver marten, I’d love to find out what else he is. Thanks for the advice Vienna! I am hand-feeding him straw and greens every day. In fact, he doesn’t seem to do much eating at all unless I am there presenting him with the food. He is literally surrounded by straw right now, but unless I stir it up around his face he won’t usually take the initiative to start eating. He will quite happily come near me, sniff me, nose bump me, and stroke me with his whiskers – but as soon as The Hand touches his fur, he’s runs away to show me that I’ve sinned. Hopefully he will come out of his shell eventually but I was well aware he didn’t like being handled when I adopted him. I don’t know how I’m going to clip his nails when the time comes!
And thank you olliebun! Your lil one is adorable as well ![]()
He is such a dapper!!! look at his jowls! Hes very handsome! If you sit and spend alot of time with him, he will become more and more friendly!
That. face. ![]()
Just a cute mix! He is not a Rex mix because of his ear shape. He is definitely not a silver fox, or any rabbit breed that currently exists. He’s just an adorable little mix boy. Silver Marten, as mentioned in previous posts is a color pattern, not a breed. The color pattern that your boy actually is, is called black otter, as characterized by the tan shading under his belly, under his chin, under the skirt of his nose, and around the edges of his ears. Silver Marten refers to a very similar color patter, but does not present the tan colorings around the chest area and ears, but is instead a pure white. This is a popular color in the Netherland Dwarf breeds.
