I have been experimenting with different litter combos myself… I currently line her litter box with puppy pad (makes litter changing easier), then use aspen supreme pellets (great with odor control but I actually happen to like that woodsy smell), carefresh on top, then a bunch of hay. I have tried aspen wood shavings instead of the pellets because I do not like how the pellets turn into saw dust… I change her litter box 2x a day. In the morning I change the whole box but before bed I like to scoop out just the urinated and large poopy areas. The pellets are really hard for me to scoop up well so that’s why I tried the aspen shavings but I realized that the shavings do not absorb at all. I have heard that wood stove pellets work really well too but I personally haven’t tried them yet. I would assume it is pretty similar to the aspen pellets maybe less of that woodsy scent? I have tried Care fresh by itself and then lined the bottom of her litter pan with newspaper. It held up pretty well actually. They claim 10 day odor control. It was not very absorbent on it’s own but it doesn’t do a horrible job either.
