Hello – new to this forum!

I posted this topic on another forum but would love some other opinions. — I bought my first bunny a few months ago. I was told it was a male and ended up with a litter of six babies a few weeks after! It was a really great experience – all six are healthy and grown up now. Most of them have gone to homes. However, we still have two of the babies with us – one boy and one girl. I let them out each night one at a time. My question is .. when is it OK to let the babies out while the mom is out and let them interact? They are 12.5 weeks old and have been weaned off the mom since 9 weeks old. Also, the mom was spayed a couple weeks ago so no chance of more babies! I tried letting each baby out with the mom a few nights ago, but the mom just started humping them. Does she need more time for her hormones to settle after getting spayed? Someone suggested that she may just be showing them who is boss – is this a possiblity?

I’d really love to be able to let them out together and have them start bonding, but I don’t want to push it if it is too soon for both the mom and babies. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Binky Bunny. Before any bonding can be attempted, all the rabbits need to be spayed or neutered, and they need a few weeks to recuperate and get all of their hormones flushed away. Males may be ready to be neutered at 4 months (whenever their testicles have descended) but females are not usually spayed until around 6 months, so you have a little time to wait before the surgeries and bonding.

It sounds like you might have the 2 baby bunnies in separate cages. If not, they should be separated now. Rabbits can reproduce at a very young age, and you don’t want to be faced with another litter.

Yes, the babies are in separate cages.
So I shouldn’t let the babies out with the mom until they are all fixed even though the mom is fixed?

If your goal is to bond them, then all 3 need to be spayed or neutered, not just the mom.
