Hi everybody!
I have been lurking here since july and I eventually signed up so I could follow links on the threads and so I figured I would say hi since I feel a part of the community already from reading all your wonderful and informative posts. I really like the atmosphere here, and I appreciate the focus on education and the respect that everyone shows to each other that is lacking in a lot of other forums.
I got my bunny Hazel who is my first bunny in july and I have to say I didn’t really know what I was doing when I took her home, but I rescued her at a festival and now I am really glad I did because now that I know more about bunnies I think her chances of ending up still alive or not in a hutch for the rest of her life were actually really slim. She is really happy and healthy and has a lot of affection and my partner and I really love having her around. It’s hard to be sad or angry when you have such a cute troublemaker hopping around to distract you!
I just took her to get spayed on october 1st and she took it like a champ! she loves to be outside more than anywhere else, I think because she grew up in a kindergarten class, so has pretty much been in a cage in a room most of her life. (Don’t worry the porch is fenced in and covered and also the sliding glass door is always open when she is outside so she can come in and out) she gets into trouble but we have bunnyproofed and found a lot of solutions and I think she will have free run by winter time when I will be working full time. Right now she is free roam when we are home, but confined to her space which is part of our bedroom and the hallway while we are gone. she loves to be groomed and runs up to visitors to check them out and get petted. she smells like hay and hates getting picked up but is surprisingly tolerant of the bunny burrito. she doesn’t hold a grudge even when I feel like she will. I think she is happy to be away from the kindergarten, and she has been through a lot (getting lost at a festival and chased by dogs until someone brought her to the information booth!). I’m not sure how old she is exactly, but she has gained about a pound and her dewlap went from very small to fullgrown looking since july. I am going to take her for a vet checkup in winter when I have some income, but she hasn’t been yet, since she seems very healthy and my job doesn’t start til november.
here are some pictures of Hazel:
