Hi there,
I have just became a bunny mom to a 1-year-old female Lionhead bunny. She has the best personality although we’re now pushing a week and she’s starting to come out of the “honeymoon” phase. In other words, the completely mellow rabbit now has her true personality showing through.. When play time is over, she thinks not. What she wants is what she wants. Ms. Diva Bunny.
With very little history on her other than knowing she was housed in a barn with other bunnies for breeding and my not having had a bunny for over 20+ years, I made a couple of immediate poor choices. My first mistake was buying a wooden hutch at Petsmart.. not big enough and poor quality. Second mistake was giving her a little too much cabbage, which resulted in a singular messy bum incident.
I now have a 42″ wire dog crate in transit, a box of wire grid cubes stashed away and after a trip to Home Depot this week, I plan to put together a nice little roomy 2-story condo for her. This clunky wooden box is going back ASAP. I’ve been studying the various crate/grid designs used by others in this community. Talk about cute! I am going to try a berber-type carpet for the second floor and hope she adjusts well to the change. I’m primarily hoping the litter box training continues on the right path. We’re getting there.. slowly but surely.
She has an appointment with a local vet (experienced and recommended for bunnies) to be spayed on Jan 20th, so I’m a little nervous about that. Just primarily fearful something could happen to her during surgery. From what I’ve read though, spaying is THE best decision to make for the longevity of the bunny.
I appreciate all of the information this community offers.. I’ve made it a nightly reading ritual.
