         Hi all!

I’m a long time lurker but decided to come out of the woodwork to introduce my two rabbits.  I’ve learned so much from browsing this site and I think, as a result, have provided a pretty happy life for these two lagomorphs!

I got my first bunny Christmas eve 2011 at a pet store (i know, i know…) when I was home visiting my parents.  I instantly fell in love with him- a cute little grey holland lop flopped over in a cage with a group of guinea pigs.  In fact, I fought another woman at the store for him and said, “back off! he’s mine!”  I brought him home and he adjusted well to his new place. I’m a grad student, and that can get pretty stressful, so a little furry floppy-eared creature really helped to relieve all that anxiety!  I named him “Femto” after the scientific prefix (which basically means really small).

I took him to the vet to have him “fixed” for what I thought was going to be a spay. The petstore told me he was a girl and the vet even confirmed this on his first checkup.  Well, I get a call after the surgery that I had a boy bunny.  His testicles were internalized and shriveled and the vet “didn’t want to use the term hemaphrodite but had never seen that before.”  Oh well!  Poor little guy had three huge scars on his belly because he basically had to undergo a spay AND a neuter.  But he recovered well and was back to his normal happy self quickly.

In April last year I rescued a quiet skiddish dutch I named “Fermata” from a local shelter.  I’m pretty sure she spent her life in a cage because she didn’t know what to do with space!  The bonding process was a trip but was eventually successful!  These two are in pure rabbit love. She is still scared of everything and thumps at the littlest noises, but when Femto is around she calms down quite nicely.

They both have free range of my house now and love it.  I’m lucky that I have two well-behaved bunnies that can handle it!  Thanks for all the good information you guys put out there, because I’m sure there are many like me that just haven’t registered but have happy bunnies at home from all they have learned.

So this is long and pic heavy, but we all love pictures of happy rabbits, don’t we?

        (fermata is the smart one)

What great pictures! I just joined, too, and it’s fun! Best of luck at grad school. Looks like a complicated book that Fermata is reading.

Oh yes.  She was teaching me about the lateral geniculate nucleus, which is the part of the brain that sends visual information from the eye to the cortex.  She’s quite a smart bunny.  Femto just kinda bums around and eats hay.  Useless creature.

What a cute pair. I’ve always thought Dutch rabbits were one of the smartest rabbits there is and I know I can see it is true :~)

Oh, that!  My Gus likes to read up on that for something light when our murder mysteries get boring!!  Ha Ha Ha

You sound like a future neurologist. My nephew is hoping to become one, though he’s just started college in Buffalo, but he’s really smart. When he came with his family for a visit, he fell in love with Gus (my new “baby” Giant Chinchilla) He’s decided he’s never going to get a dog. He just wants one of these rabbits!  I could see that being the perfect pet for a grad student.

It seriously is the perfect match for a grad student. I don’t have to take them out. Dont have to walk them. I pet them when I study and build them cardboard palaces when I need a break. And rubbing a bunny’s ears is better stress relief than any sort of behavioral therapy would provide haha. Sometimes I worry I might rub their ears right off their heads… but they keep hopping back over so I guess all is well.

And megabunny (awesome name!) that’s cool about your nephew! Tell him to keep at it. I’m just over in Rochester so we are almost neighbors!

They are an absolutely stunning pair. I love mismatched pairs!

Mismatched are the best! I have a soft spot in my heart for lops, but the pointy ears are so expressive!
