new to the forum and just wanted to say hi.
recently the proud new mommy of a 4 week continental Pipkin. this is my first rabbit in a long time and im hoping to do it the right way
with your help. my last rabbit Scruff died of mixy when my neighbour’s **** thought it would be funny to come into my garden and let him out of the hutch and into the field to play with the wild rabbits. i found him in the field later that day, and a few days later his eyes crusted over. i’m older and hopefully wiser, i have pipkin booked in for his vaccine, and have a yale lock on my shed door.
Pipkin is a rabbit that knows what he wants and will have a tantrum if he doesn’t get it. food bowl tipping seems to be his favourite outlet for his vexations, especially when he realises hes not getting any broccoli. definitely a diva in the making. hobbies include cuddling into my wool when im knitting and seeing how high he can binky from standing. he likes rolling in the sun, and chewing my dogs ears. pipkin loves to see people and will try to climb up you if cuddles are not administered quickly enough.
i will admit when we got him i though he was too young so i spend the night in a sleeping bag in the shed to make sure he was okay and it didnt get too cold. it was the worst nights sleep of my life as he decided climbing my head was the best possible game ever!
we’ve had a lot of fun building him his run. and hope to get him a summer house to go with it

Welcome to BinkyBunny. Is there anyway were Pipkin can live indoors with you? That would prevent the temperature and nosy neighbor problems. AND then you can see binkies all day!

I saw you mentioned broccoli and wanted to let you know it can cause stomach issues with some buns. And of course all new veggies should be introduced in small amounts slowly over time.If Pipkin is the bun in your pic, he is ADORABLE! Congrats on becoming a bunny slave.

I agree with FrankieFlash, it would be best to have him inside the house. Myxomatosis can be transmitted by mosquitoes and fleas, so as long as he lives outside he can get it just like your previous bunny
Also, he is quite young, normally they should stay with their mom until 8-12 weeks of age. Is there any way he could go back to his litter until he’s older?

im not sure ill have to ask if he can go back for while. last i heard from him the doe had dried up and she wasnt keen having the kits near her anymore. yes i would prefer him in the house and we are working on that. hes nearly litter trained he only has a few accidents when hes in the house now and pees mostly on the tray left in his shed. im just waiting to get him some thing secure for in the house to keep him out of trouble at nigh as though my dogs are fine with him i dont want them loose together unsupervised. his shed is insulated it was just the first night i was worried as i am a great worrier. but he will be moved into the house before the first frost but id like any ideas how to proceed with it.

I was concerned too, reading that he’s away from the mum at 4 weeks. Even if they’re aren’t getting milk and are eating on their own, it’s still pretty important they stay with the mum until 8 weeks of age. Not your fault though. Has the owner had rabbit litters before? I’m not meaning to worry you. One of my own was with me from 4 weeks old and he did fine. You just have to keep an eye on the poop. Make sure he’s producing healthy looking rabbit poo and producing his own cecals that they re-ingest.

It’s great that you are planning to get him inside!
Normally rabbit cages that they sell at stores are too small even for an average sized bunny, even more so for a Continental. The most popular habitats people use are X-pens or condos built from wire grids like these http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=16719773
X-pens are easiest since you don’t have to built anything and they are easily collapsible for cleaning and such.
The habitat section on this forum will give you lots of ideas
He should not give you too much trouble with his litter habits if you keep him confined to a smaller area until he’s good about going in the box, then gradually extend his freedom.
