After lurking on the forums for a little over two months, I thought I should actually start participating.
First, thank you to everyone for the excellent advice posted. I became a new bunny-mom on a little bit of a whim–I have loved rabbits my entire life and wanted a new pet, but always thought of getting a dog since I love and grew up with them, but it didn’t feel quite right. Then, a coworker of mine told me about her house-rabbit and it hit me like a thunderbolt that a house-rabbit was the perfect pet solution. A few weeks later, after lots of research and reading, I went to a local no-kill shelter to meet an adorable chocolate rex whose online profile and “sunny but somewhat vague” expression stole my heart. After talking with the kind people who run the shelter and sitting in the pen with the rex, he decided I was OK enough to flop by, causing cheers. Later that afternoon, he moved into his new posh home and began his transition from a stray rabbit from the streets of Chicago to being the most amusing, mellow, and spoiled little thing in the world.
His name is still kind of undecided after two months. His official name on his paperwork is “Paris”, but I tend to think of him more as a “Charlemagne” or “Charlie”. When he investigates new corners of his domain (his favorite activity next to eating and pooping), I call him “Fuzzy-Butt, PI”. At the moment, he is “Easter Bunny Secret Agent ‘Ganache'” when I am pressed for a name. Usually, I refer to him as “Da Bunneh.”
Here is a photo of my little guy relaxing on a Sunday afternoon.
