Hello forum members!  New member here from Southern California…

I just joined today… last week we became new bunny owners.  My daughter (just shy of 14) found a small bunny in the middle of the road.  I went over and could see she was injured.  She had clearly been attaced by an owl or hawk.  We took her home, put her in a spare bird cage (I have lots of parrots, used to breed, so have many extra cages around).  We gave her some fresh veggies, hay (we also have a 100+ pound tortoise!), and water, tended her wounds and left her alone until I could get her into the vet.

Before the vet visit, I warned my daughter that if the wounds were not treatable, and the kindest thing to do would be to put her down, then thats what I will have them do… so, no surprise, my daughter didn’t want to go with me! LOL  So we see the vet, she gives her a basic physical, and she looks great, just really skinny, at under 2 pounds.  She then moves to the wounds.  She lets me know the wounds are not fresh, as the “tallon” marks on her back have already scabbed up (now gone) but the the “skinned” tail and surrouning area were still pretty raw.  So I’m not sure if it was multiple attacks or just the one.  She gives “Bugsy” 2 shots, antibiotic & anti-inflamitory and pain killer, and sends me home with oral of the same, along with a probiotic.  She told me she should heal nicely, but the tail will end up falling off.  We go for a follow up apt later this afternoon.

So here we are, 2 cats, 1 dog, 40+ birds, tortiose, snake, fish, horses… blah blah blah… hubby tells me we need a rabbit like we need a hole in the head! LOL…  Weekend hits, rabbit hutch is purchased and put together!  Bugsy is doing well with the meds, the scabs on her back are gone after some grooming.  The big wounds on her “buttcheeks” has scabbed over, a nasty black scab… I think from the betadine (sp?… forgot that above, she gets that on the wounds twice a day)  but the tail looks bad… the top where it meets the backend keeps opening up, the wound looks healthy & pink, but it cant feel good   We’ll see what the vet thinks today.

Long story short… I havent had a rabbit since I was my daughters age!  So feeding & care needed refreshing!  She’s been doing some nasty pee’s but after reading up, they can be orange due to the veggies & also being on antibiotics.  So its pretty normal, and one less thing for me to worry about

Once she’s all healed and put some weight on, we’ll get her fixed so she can have a long happy life   I’m guessing being a wild bunny, she’s probably pretty young.  We bring her in each afternoon for some bonding time, she’s very gentle and hopefully will tame up nicely !  So there ya go… our introduction the forum!  I look forward to meeting you all and learing some things !

        Anna

(I attached 2 pics, but i dont see them???)

Welcome – I fixed your post – you have to insert the image.

She’s very lucky to have been found by you. I think she may be a domestic bunny but it’s hard to tell by this photo. She does have the coloring for a wild rabbit but her ears are pretty large for a cottontail

Would you consider bringing her inside?

thanks for fixing them, i tried to put photobucket img codes, that didnt work, so i uploaded them as attachments.

she comes in for play time, but her hutch is on the patio. we are at work during the day, so she’s be harrased by the cats while we’re gone! Her hutch is much bigger than a cage we could keep inside, plus I want to get a run for her so she can graze on the lawn too. And right now, I wouldnt trust my dog with her loose in the house… but with time, I’d never rule it out.

Totally understand. I think she might be okay with the cats once they get to know her…you could try introducing them and see how they get along :~) I’ve heard of rabbits bossing cats around!

Sending continued healing vibes her way too.

Thanks! she needs them! But she’s eating well, and her poo’s look good, when she first came to us, they were pretty soft, but now very normal. I’ve been looking around the shop here, the pellets look good as well as the sea grass mats.

Whats your favorite grass/hay? I get in orchard & bermuda for the tortoise… i’ve yet to see her eat hay, but she’s been doing well with the pellets and veggies. She’s just so skinny i’m happy she’s eating! Her hip bones, ribs & spine are very prominent

Orchard & bermuda are great and also timothy is good. It’s probably good to give her unlimited pellets right now while she’s recovering – how old does the vet think she is?

Greenville – you won’t be too far from me then :~) I think it’s about 1 and a half away.

Great, i’ll stick with the orchard & bermuda… timothy isn’t the best for my tortoise, so hopefully they can keep using the same

She thinks she pretty young judging on her size & weight… i’ll pick her brain again this afternoon! I snapped a pic of her urine on my phone too, I want to double check that its ok. If I remember right, she was 904g, so thats just shy of 2lbs?

how funny… i’ll wave as i fly into dallas

oh, and as to her “breed” she has ears like a jack rabbit, but doesnt have the body of one. She reminds me of my childhood rabbit. I need to do some homework on rabbit breeds

                          I’ll wave back :~)

She kind of reminds me of a Rex rabbit – it’s hard to tell in that photo. Rexes have very short soft fur and their whiskers are kind of curly.

Otherwise she could be a mix of something which many rabbits are.

awh what a cutie! I’m glad you guys rescued her! My bun loves orchard and the sea-grass mat from BB. Another favorite treat is the willow leaves from BB. I can’t wait to see her heal up and come out of her shell (as I’m sure you can’t either).

                              oh and HI, Welcome!

Welcome to BB Poor bunny! She is lucky you rescued her!! I’m glad she’ll be okay.

Do you have mats or something on the floor of the hutch? Wire bottoms can be tough on their little bunny feetsies. After she’s healed up she’ll be ready to litter train

Her coloring looks to be agouti. Thought I’d throw it out there in case you didn’t know. It might help you with your research.

Welcome – what a great thing you did for that poor little bun! Are you planning on getting her spayed once she’s all healed up? She is such a beauty! Congrats =)

Lucky bunny to have been found!
If she is not terrified of you I would say she is not wild, there are domestic rabbits with that wild colouring.
