Hello all! My name’s Alex (the girl kind, not that it matters), and I’m new to bunnydom! Because I like filling in forms, below is some more info about my bunny and me!
Rabbit Info:

Yay and welcome!!
Just a few tips I’ve learned from here and other places, 1, it’s very highly recommended you get her spayed at about 5 months old. Female rabbits have an up to 85% chance of getting cancer, but if they are spayed that goes away. It also curbs the “teenage” years, where they are generally moody destructive little mutants
And overall its considered to make them better and happier pets.
2, they aren’t really a cage animal. They need to be able to run their Bunny 500 and binky and can be a extremely loving friend, but like any animal it takes time from you. I really liked this site http://language.rabbitspeak.com/ to help me understand a little what is going on in my buns minds
3, ask as many questions as you want, there isn’t such thing as a stupid question
And last, we (Ok I) LOVE photos, so post as many as you want ![]()
Thank you for being so welcoming! I really appreciate all the help I can get.
I will look into places to get her spayed at five months, and then remind myself to do so. What does the process entail?
I am definitely trying to keep her outside her cage and in my room as much as I can when I’m at home, though you’re right – it does take your time. Luckily, she’s completely adorable and loves running around as much as cuddling up.
…Under your bed, adding a dust-bunny! lol Welcome! Sweep is absolutely precious and adorable… Want to steal her! She looks like a Blue in your photo – is she?
Most vets wait until 6 months to spay a female. Find a GOOD bunny vet, make sure they handle spay/neuter of rabbits specifically often. A dog/cat vet won’t know enough about rabbits to make it safe without the exotics training. A big red flag is if they tell you to fast her, since rabbits cannot vomit, they should never be fasted. House rabbit society’s web page has a page on finding a good vet.
The process is like any animal – you take them to the vet, drop them off, the vet puts them under and removes ovaries+uterus. Your bun will have a scar on her tummy and stitches you’ll have to keep an eye out for infections and she’ll be sore for several days, make sure the vet gives you pain meds and you will need to give them to her by either syringe or hiding them in a treat (which ever she accepts). Some vets keep them over night, some send them home the same day. They usually get back to normal after about a week.
She’s very cute.
Awh she’s an adorable little dust bunny ;P Weclome (: Do you know if she’s a holland or a mini?
@lshbkay & @bunnnyfriend, I see I am going to have to ask my pet store owner more questions! I just wonder if I’m going to be able to understand the answers in Chinese… Hopefully I’ll be able to report back to you on the weekend when I go to buy another litter tray for outside her cage.
@Stickerbunny – thanks for the info! I’ll ask on the Chinese version of Yahoo Answers and see where best to get my bunny spayed. It sounds super traumatic; is there anything I can do afterwards to help minimise the after-effects?
After a spay, make sure to get her pain meds. My vet gives metacam. Also make sure she is confined to a smaller area for at least a week, and check her incision every day. Don’t let her race around or jump up on stuff. She won’t want to eat much the first day or so, but keep her favorite foods on hand to tempt her into nibbling on something. ![]()
Welcome! What an adorable bunny…I’m glad that you’re trying to do the best you can for her
. A word of advice, once you find a vet make sure you interview them to verify that they do really know their stuff about bunnies, since treating bunnies (especially for something like spaying) can be different from cats and dogs…the House Rabbit Society has a good list of vet screening questions: rabbit.org/faq/sections/vet.html#questions
If you’re having problems with reading answers to bunny questions in Chinese, I’d be glad to give it a shot!
@Monkeybun – thanks for the tips! I’ll be sure to come back here before getting her spayed.
@peppypoo – thanks for the link! I’ll have to translate a few words but I should be able to ask the vet most of them. And I’m mostly having trouble finding a vet with web presence in Beijing that isn’t for cats and dogs – it’s harder than I thought! I asked on Baidu Answers but the only answer I’ve gotten is an ad for a dog vet…. I’ll let you know if I come across anything I can’t read or am unsure about, though. Thank you!
Welcome Alex and Sweep : ) (I loved Sooty& Sweep as a kid!)
The HRS site that peppypoo linked is also available in Chinese translation if that helps at all.
There is a HRS contact in Hong Kong also that might be able to give you some vet references.
Carmen Chui, Hong Kong chuicarmen@gmail.com
We have a member here also that was living in China though I’m not certain she still is. Her username is alic if you want to sent her a PM for any references.
Binky Bunny has this thread that lists some sites with International vet lists: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tab…fault.aspx
@jerseygirl Thanks for the tips! I’ve sent an email to Dr Chui, and also the user you suggested (though she hasn’t been active since 2009; hopefully she has email notifications on!) – hopefully I will hear something back from them. I looked at the sites on the thread but there were only two Hong Kong vets listed on any of the world/us+world sites. I’m sure I’ll find something! There are some local forums I might ask on, since everyone seems to only talk about cats and dogs…
Also, hey Australian! Where are you from? I was born in Adelaide but did uni in Sydney, and was there before I came to China.
Lol. I’m in Adelaide. ![]()
Awesome! It’s such a lovely little city, though I haven’t been back in ages. Nice to meet you! ![]()
