Hi, my name is Holli. I’m new to rabbits, but i do know the basics of care. I just bought my two buns on 9/23/2011. I named them Jasper and Lulu. I bought them because there were no bunnies/rabbits in any shelter near my location, I checked every one. The place where i found them were feeding them bread and water and they were in tiny cages with no hay or pellets, I knew they needed good homes. They will be indoor bunnies. Jasper is about 5 or 6 months old and Lulu is about 4 months. Neither of them are altered since they are a little too young yet. Lulu is pure white and Jasper is a brownish/orangish color all over, they are both lops. Lulu is shy and tends to like being in her bunny hideout i made for them. Jasper on the other hand is sweet and outgoing, can be naughty some times and loves attention. He loves to run back and forth through the house and will flop at my feet for pets and kisses. He likes all attention to be on him and has taken to the litterbox very well. I love and adore them both but he’s definately my heart bunny. I chose rabbits because they have always been my favorite animal. I’m 22 currently, but I’ll be 23 in November. I am overweight and going to weight watchers, which means all my new snack options will be bunny friendly also. I have a full time job in customer service and i spend all my free time with my new buns. My fiance and I share a 3 bedroom house in the country and we plan on getting married in December 2012.

          Hi there and welcome

You must post photos of your rabbits when you get the chance

The boy is indeed old enough to be altered. Boys are of age to be neutered at 4 months, and females at 6 months. Are they seperated at all?
Here is a good list of vets to look off of
          http://www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

Some of us on here are looking to get fit as well I can’t live without my blender, and works out, hhahaha

          Hope you have fun here!

I have them in their own separate areas for now, but i want to bond them after they are altered. I was able to find only one vet in my town that will care for rabbits, and just a basic check up and gland cleaning is $98.50 for each bun.   I want the best for my bun babies, but i’ll have to save up for the vet visit. I changed their diet also- they have pellets, fresh greens and hay every day, i know the bread was not good for them, poor babies.

Rabbits are considered exotics (I don’t know why.. but I do know that they require special care) and their care can be a little more expensive compapred to cats and dogs. I’m glad that you found a vet that sees rabbits – it is so so so important

Can they do a discount for seeing 2 rabbits? O_o A general check up can vary, but wow that is really expensive for ONE bunny!

I haven’t the slightest clue why they are considered exotics either. I’ll have to check and see if they can give me a deal for 2 buns. I really want to get them both checkups as they were not in good care when i got them. I tried to check their teeth and glands as best as i could yesterday ( i don’t believe in trancing them) and it looks good, but it’s always good to have a complete check up.

Also do you know of any safe household cleaners i can clean the house with without it being toxic or harmful for them, I’ve been looking at getting Kids “n Pets, a natural enzyme cleaner, or vinegar, but are there other options. I know i’ll need to toss out the pine-sol.

Did you get your vet from rabbit.org? While they do list many vets in each area, they are not the ONLY vets that see rabbits. Both of my vets are not on the rabbit.org website and they are actually better than the ones that they have listed… haha! So if you haven’t actually checked around, do so because $100 for a check up is expensive! Of course, you gotta do what you gotta do… also, there may be vets that are within an hour or so from you and those are an option too!
For cleaners, I use white vinegar mixed with a squeezed lemon and warm water.. I’ve found it’s best for removing smells and for cleaning up accidents on the carpet.
                  Welcome!

Actually i did try rabbit.org, but they did not have any vets near my location, so i asked my mom what vet she uses for her dog, I called them and they refered me to the expensive vet i mentioned, i think he’s the only vet in town that will care for rabbits, but i’ll check around to be sure. There is not very many rabbit resources out here where i live.

                      Hey! Welcome!
Have you tried calling any colleges? I take my rabbit to a vet at our vet school (Oklahoma State) and she is great! They have a rabbit/exotics specialist there that helps the students learn about rabbits. They are pretty cheap too. The spay there was $80, a check up is around $30.

                            Welcome here!

I would recommend you contact vets in neighboring areas as well. If you’re in an expensive area, sometimes driving just an hour away can save you quite a bit of money. Obviously, this might not work as your everyday vet, or who you would go to in an emergency, but for a one-time spay/neuter surgery, it might be worth it.

I’m assuming you’re in Texas, and we do have some Texas members, so someone may have a recommendation.

As young rabbits, anal gland cleaning shouldn’t be necessary just yet. It would be better to have a fecal exam to check for parasites than gland cleaning at this point.

I’ll see about vets farther out that i can get to, that would be a good idea.

How was everyone’s weekend? My cuddle buns turned into destructo buns saturday night, all cardboard toys were in shreds sunday morning, all blankets pulled from their beds, and pellets far far away from the litter box…..and i thought the litter box training was going well up to saturday.    Oh well, I’ll keep trying. No wonder why Jasper got on the bed to snuggle Sunday morning. I’m suprised that he comes to me for snuggles and pets on his own. I’ve heard rabbits don’t like to snuggle or be picked up and he doesn’t mind either. hmmmmm…… and yesterday he ran from the living room to the kitchen door when he heard me walking in just to greet me. I haven’t seen him do any binkies yet though…i guess i’ll just have to be patient for those.
