        Hi everyone,

I’m Dan and I just got a bunny two days ago and he’s my first bunny. My friend Helenor, who is already a member here will be taking care of him for a while until I get settled in because I’m moving today to Missouri. My bunny is a velveteen lop mix, with some beveren, english lop and mini rex. His name is Don and he’s 8 weeks old. He will be neutered as soon as he is old enough.

I would like to ask members how to deal with cold weather and bunnies. I’ve only lived in California, so I’m not sure how to make Don comfortable in cold weather. Also, if anyone else if from Missouri and knows any good rabbit vets around Columbia, that would also be great.

        Thanks!

Hello, Don is really cute!!! Welcome to BB

Sorry, what do you mean by cold weather? Will you not have a heater in your house?

I will have a heater, but I’m not sure what is cold to him. What might be a comfortable temperature range for me might not be for him.

Both of my rabbits think laying on top of the A/C vent as it is on full blast is a perfectly comfortable temperature (even though it freezes me to lay by it with them) so, what is comfortable to you is probably fine for him. 70-73 is my buns preferred temperature range, but I doubt they’d mind if it got colder. Any hotter and they are acting like they are dying and glaring at mommy for making it so hot (even if it’s only 75!). lol I have a spoiled little pair though

                He’s a cutie and welcome

Bunnies can handle the cold much better than they can handle heat. They have lots of fur to keep them warm. Some ppl take their bunnies out to play in the snow; heard they are very playful in the snow. I don’t think you have to worry about the cold unless you plan on freezing yourself =). I believe they need a little more to eat in the cold though since they’ll burn off calories keeping warm.

What an adorable bunny Don is! Welcome! You can always try a nice fleece donut cat bed with your bunny when it gets cold or cool. Both my bunnies have a variety of bumper beds made from fleece and they’re always in them, even when it gets warm in the apartment.

                              Welcome!

                              Your bunny is super cute!
I live in Northern California where we sometimes get snow and whatnot.

Rabbits can tolerate the cold very well and they actually seem to enjoy it (they LOVE playing in snow too, you should see the wild ones outside! Aw…). The lowest I’ve ever seen comfy domestic bunnies is about 40 degrees. I’m pretty sure you’ll be fine! You need to be more careful about not overheating your house as opposed to it getting too chilly for bunbun.
