I am Megan Pressley, I go by Meg mostly, or Meg Pressley.  I am nineteen, a college student (currently on my summer break until August), and I am a resident of the beautiful state of Virginia.  I am hoping to get a job at Build-a-bear so I can work with kids and super adorable stuffed animals; mostly so I can save up money to get more things for my babies and a new camera to take pictures of my babies.  Any free time I have once I get the job and once school starts will go to homework and bunnies.  :]  (Also, I liek to write, it’s a huge hobby and part of my life and I tend to write a lot no matter what — so, yea, you might see some huge posts from me).

My first rabbit I bought last year as a graduation gift from my parents.  She’s a black Mini Rex, who at first we thought was a buck (but we looked at the pictures and realized that the beautiful creature is actually a doe).  It took me almost a whole month to name her, and we finally chose Pixie Marie as her name.  She also received the label Princess or Diva because she’s so picky, she’s like a little princess.  She’s about five pounds now, and roughly a year old (the pet store said she was three months old when I got her — and I bought her on June 26th, 2010).  We gave her an official birthdate so we could celebrate it properly; her birthday is April 22nd, of course the date is a rough estimate since we are unsure of her actual day of birth.  She’s a beautiful rabbit.

The quality may be horrid, since I had to take the picture with the camera on my phone.

Sitting there waiting for me to clean her cage.

Before I cleaned her cage — managed to get a side profile :]

She started to get curious in hopes I had snacks in my hand for her to eat :]

Pixie sniffing her blanket for more snacks — after I cleaned her cage.

Oh, she got tired of waiting so she gave me the bunny butt!

After I cleaned her cage, I gave her Aria’s pinecone to see what she would do.  She started sniffing it and then started to chomp on it.

My second rabbit, and my most recent rabbit to the home is a tortoise black Lionhead.  The pet store, the same one I bought Pixie from, said that the Lionhead was a buck, well as per usual, they were wrong, definitely a doe.  We named her Aria Skye, and she’s quite the active little bunny.  She loves to come out and play, she loves food, and she wants to be with Pixie (though since they are unspayed it’s difficult to bond them).  Unfortunately since she was a rabbit that I kind of bought on the spur of the moment on May 21st, when my friend and I walked into the pet store, I had to persuade my parents, and they had to quickly find a cage, and I haven’t been able to do up her cage quite like I want to — we don’t have all the materials yet.  She’s so soft and so pretty, and she’s much smaller then Pixie.  Aria is about three or four pounds.  I will soon post up pictures of her as well.

Before I cleaned her she was playing with her pinecone that I later gave to Pixie out of curiosity.

I had to pet her to get her to stop moving enough for me to quickly take this picture.  She likes to move around.

She’s like, “C’mon Mom just clean me and give me my food already.”

Now she’s at least a little curious about the weird object in my hands that’s getting all the attention of my hands.

There we go, Momma finally gave her the snacks she’s been waiting for.  :]  “Nom nom.”

Inside her cage eating her food.  “Nom nom.”

Pixie’s cage set up is simple, and she seems to really like it.  Right now I only have the store bought cage, since that’s all I could afford (I will be saving up for new cages for both of them).  On the cage footing we put a clear plexi-type flooring on it, and left a strip on the right side uncovered so extra urine or poop could fall through the openings (and we could also push it there if extra strays from the litter box), on top of the plexi, since Pixie doesn’t like the hard surfice all alone because it’s slippery, we put down an old water proof pad down to protect her feets.  We cut the pads in the appropriate length to fit just before her litter box.  For now, her litter box is made from plastic and we cut the sides down, making sure they weren’t sharp, and made it a good height to protect some splash and make sure she could easily go from the litter box to the open cage space.  In front of her litter box, to the corner is her plastic water bowl, with a bottle as well.  Next to that is her glass food bowl (we’re hoping to also get her a glass water bowl since right now her water bowl is made from plastic).  We really like this set up for her, she seems to like it as well, but since we got her from such a young age she was kind of raised to be a neat rabbit (and she seems to do well with it).  This is why we call her a Princess, she likes for things to be clean and orderly.  Crazy as it seems.

Pixie’s cage set up, from the top.

And her set up from the front.  I know her cage is a bit small, it’s store bought and right now all I can afford.

We’re hoping to do something similar to Aria’s cage once we litter train her more.  (We’re hoping to do something different with their cages period, but I need to save up the money in order to do this, so it’ll be a while for now).  I really don’t like Aria’s cage set up right now, because it’s not really good for her to have it set up like this.  Since we got this cage off of a friend it’s really old and worn looking.  Right now it’s just the wiring on the floor, and Aria seems to enjoy it, but I don’t particularly like it knowing she could get hurt and get hocks on her feets.  I’ve tried putting down cardboard, she’ll eat it up and make so much raucus none of us can sleep, I’ve but mats and blankets down and she’ll just dig at them and start chewing on them, and then lay on the exposed cage part that she had made.  I’m hoping to buy some of the same plexi we have for Pixie’s cage and putting it down, securing it and making splash guards liek we did with Pixie’s.  I’m hoping to get her a corner litter box, because she seems to go specifically in one corner (but she does horribly in the litter box like we had for Pixie), so we had cut it down and stuck it on the bottom under the cage itself.  She’s a random pooper, she’ll just poop anywhere, and her pee is in one or both of the back corners.  We have her food and water on the left side, but I want to move it over to the right; every time I put in there a plastic bowl for her water that we had extra she tipped it and spilled water everywhere (so for now I’m waiting to buy her a glass crock like her food bowl).  She likes to make a mess with her cardboard, and she likes to chew on paper and cardboard and blankets.  She’s a bit more wild and messy than Pixie, and it’s sometimes hard to get to know her since she’s a more recent bunny and already a year old when I bought her (so she’s already gotten into her ways — but I’m hoping to train her and get her used to something else eventually).

Aria’s cage from the top.  The newspaper is from the pull out tihng at the bottom of her cage, it has her two make-shift litter boxes and her newspaper litter.  I hate this set up so much because there isn’t anything protecting her feets at the moment (and everything I put in there she digs out of the way or chews up).

From the front view  (that cardboard that’s in there was from the cardboard floor I tried making her a few days ago…  That’s pretty much all that’s left of it).

I don’t really like my bunnies to be in their cages, I wish they could be free range bunnies, but since I live with my parents and we rent (and I’m not technically supposed to have pets — unless they are in cages, and I did get permission for A bunny….).  It’s kind of difficult for us to bunny proof our house, and have a save free range house because we have a lot of foot traffic since my brother it handicap and has three aides coming into the house (hopefully, once my mother becomes a sponsor and we get our own place I’ll have more room).  I try to let them out for a good amount during the day by putting up an xpen peice and attaching it to the end of each cage (since they are in a corner — picture below this paragraph as an example) and let them have an eaqual amount of play time by themselve since they are not bonded (even though they are not spayed I am working on bonding them anyway).

The corner and play area I create for my bunnies (they go in separately though).

I put a sheet down to protect their nails from the carpet, and to protect the floor from poop and urine.  I also put out a blanket so they can dig and lay on it as well if they want.  The blue sheets hanging on the walls are to protect the wall from any pee that they may splash over their guards. (I’m currently letting Pixie romp around for a while).  In the open part of the corner, their box with the blue top goes there.

They get a bowl full of pellets a day (and they do well to make it last the whole day since they are also entertained by cardboard and toilet rolls and paper towel rolls.  I also give them snacks, I try to limit which ones I give them during the day; right now we only have the cubed hay so I tend to break it apart and turn it into loose hay for them to eat and I mix a little into their food bowls since I have a limited supply of this (I am hoping soon to get some loose timothy hay for them and a feeder to make it easier for them to have a daily supply of hay).  I’ll have to share some of the things I feed them with you guys, I give them different snacks on different days and I try to make sure I don’t give them too much and all that.  But we have found that they really enjoy some of these snacks — and I make sure that none of them have nuts, seeds, or corn in them because I know that’s not healty for a rabbit.  I’m hoping to getting into feeding them more veggies and fruits (but we have a limited supply of the kind they can have).

I have a lot of things planned on the way I want to house my rabbits and have things set up for them, which I’m hoping to one day be able to do in the future after saving some money — I’ve seen so many good set ups that I’ve been inspired by many and really want them to have an awesome set up better than what they have now.

Anyway, that’s all I have for now — I need to shush before it gets too long winded (scratch that, it already is too long winded).  I get really into it sometimes.  I’ll go into more detail about certain things upon request, and I will certainly try my best to answer questions. :]

P.s.  Right now, I am trying to save for them to be spayed, that’s why I cannot break into my account and buy the cage material right now…  I can pad Aria’s cage down with blankets and cardboard easy enough and hopefully hold on to it for long enough until I can buy the plexi material for the cage.

          Welcome Meg : )
Wow! You really do like to write. It’s all good. Lots of info for us to get to know you and your bunnies. They’re a sweet pair of girls. I hope you continue to find lots of inspiration on the site & forums and can get things set up more to your liking. Don’t be afraid to ask questions either.

It’s great to hear you are saving up to have the bunnies spayed. It is so important. There are programs around that offer lower cost spays and neuters. Though this is mostly for cats and dogs, some do rabbits also. So keep your eyes opened.

Do you have any farms nearby? Good quality horse hay can be really cheap. Especially this time of year as the farms are selling the hay in storage to prepare for the new hay crop. You need to be able to store it though. Some people buy 1/2 bales or just flakes of hay at a time.

With Aria’s cage, what about trying some tiles? You could lay them on top and leave a little gap to sweep stuff down to the catch tray like you’ve done in Pixies cage. Aria is less likely to be able move the flooring with tile and might like the coolness of it in Summer. Since she seems to like to dig, a big litterbox on one side would allow her to dig to her hearts content and help with the potty training also.

          I hope these suggestions help.

            They are so cute!

What are you going to school for? Do you live at home?

Now that’s a way to make an entrance to Binky Bunny; Loaded with bunny pictures.

Aren’t Mini-Rex’s wonderful? My first bunny was a Mini-Rex (the little Harlequin in my avatar) and he made me into a crazy bunny lady in no time. He is still ruler of my house at 7 years old. I now have 2 more bunnies and we all offer you a big welcome to the greatest rabbit forum ever! I’ve been here a long time so I’m allowed to brag us up.

Actually, I’m not sure if there are any close farms near by; I’ve only lived in my little area for ten years and I still don’t know too much about it. I am sure there are a lot of farms here though because this place is all land, cows, horses and crops — so I’ll have to definitely look into that. It sounds like a good plan to me, and probably much easier to get it all close by and store it in my shed rather than buying it offline…

I am looking into multiple vets and places where I could possibly get my bunnies spayed. I’ve found one and they sound really educated and have a specific wing to their vet hospital that is just for exotic animals like bunnies, birds, reptiles, etc. I emailed them and asked what the cost would be, and it’s quite expensive at this place, but it comes with the exam three days before, the pre-anesthesia blood work, anesthesia for the procedure, medication for after, and they require that the pet stays a day after to make sure all is well. I was quite surprised at such the lengthy response; and I was impressed. If I cannot find a different place that offers the same things for less money than I’ll save up and go for this place.

I’m going to definitely have to try the tile idea, along with the corner litter box. I think they will really work for her because Aria does sprawl out a lot on the cage floor and I think she does it to keep cool (it gets kind of hot in the room at night — I’ve been thinking of getting a small fan to keep the air cool in here for them). I notice she does it more at night, the sprawling out, when it’s getting hotter in the room. The tile idea is brilliant and I’m most definitely going to look into that and hopefully find some good tile (any suggestions of good places to find tile?) and a corner litter box for her.

I do live at home yes, so I’m lucky to have my Mom around to help me take care of them in the middle of the day at least once to clean their litter boxes and give them some veggies if I’m out (during those days where I will be at school a little longer than they’re both used to. Right now I’m going for my general studies, and then I’ll be transferring — and finding my own apartment — to a different college (most likely kind of close to home for now) to work on the education aspect since I want to major in Elementary Education.

Oh my goodness, I absolutely love Mini-Rex’s! Their fur is to die for; so soft. I love petting my little Pixie so much because her fur just feels so comforting (plus, she enjoys being pampered very much by her Mommy). I also like to look at other Mini-Rex’s because their coloring and their fur just looks so gorgeous, they are definitely a beautiful breed. I am so glad to have my little Mini-Rex. :]  And oh goodness, I love your Mini-Rex.  He’s so handsome!

Welcome – they are so cute!

I understand having to pinch pennies – I got my Riley when I was a freshman in college, and I also had to save up to get him a larger cage and for his neuter – but I LOVED the results (nice clean litter box and no stray pee or poop, totally worth it!).

Watch Craigslist for NIC panels and for old dog kennels/pens – they make great cages, and they work fine used. Sometimes you can even find some free ones.

Keep the pictures coming, they are so cute!

I am looking into NIC/C&C cages and thinking up a space and set up for my girls to have more room – but to also be separated from one another seeing as how I am still saving for a spay. But I wanted them to have more space to romp and play around and to not be stuck in their cage most of the day because I cannot always let them out the way i want – they do each get three to four hours a day during the evening hours – but I really want them to not have to be in their cages until I can give them their time out… And since the way they are set up now only give me the chance to let one out at a time I’m trying to think up of a safe space for them so they can play and romp and have fun, but also not be able to get out of the space if I’m not here.

That’s currently my goal: a safe big space for them to be, with maybe a second level with a hidey-space for them in their respective spaces. Once they’re spayed and can begin the bonding process full time I want to make it where it is easy to remove the barrier between them so they can be together. So I’m looking into that and making ideas and plan in my mind.

I also recently found a vet, after sending out over twenty emails and asking if they did rabbit care and if they did what they did for the rabbits and the cost so I would know how much to save. I found a vet who has two rabbits of his own, and both the vets there do rabbit care. I’ll be about three hundred to four hundred for both of them. So I’m hoping to save up enough for both of them in the next month or two and get my girls spayed.

Just thought I’d post up some good news.
