the cats, rabbits, and dog are in kennels in the hallway and my daughter is sitting in the closet with her flashlight and a stack of pillows.  i’m sitting in front of the closet door monitoring the storm and waiting to see if i need to join her.  my husband is at work feeding me minute by minute tornado reports.   the sirens stopped for a few minutes, but have started again.  luckily, goose thinks it’s all just a fun game.  i love thunderstorms.  the tornadoes, i could do without.

Oh dear, Mossling. May the tornadoes give you all a very wide berth.

thanks. we survived. goose was really great and listened well. this was the first time she was old enough to understand what was going on. she kept calling tornadoes “tomatoes”, unless i pronounced it syllable by syllable with her.

Glad everything went ok, and glad that you have a plan to keep everyone safe. I am big on planning for emergencies. My biggest fear however is rounding up 5 cats in case of an emergency. 3 of them are pretty easy to find and deal with. One of the others is really shy and our fifth is completely neurotic.

It’s so great that you have a plan! I wish more pet owners did.

I would probably be a complete mess in that situation. The dogs, cat, and bunny would be easy enough to contain, but I would feel like a monster leaving the fish behind. I would be that girl with the house burning down around her trying to scoop the fish into buckets

                    Glad the tornado missed you!

Yup. Same here. 3 cats and 3 unbonded rabbits. Would be very difficult trying to round them all up. My biggest fear is having to evacuate. I would NEVER leave my animals. No matter what.

i have this theory- if i over prepare, i guarantee the worst will miss us. the moment the severe weather alerts start going out, i start getting ready. i round up and cage whichever rabbit is out at the moment, confine the cats to one room, set the kennels up in the hall, pull out the storm kit and obsessively check the flashlight batteries, pull all the coats out of the closet and make it “fun” for goose with pillows, blankets, and books, then sit back and wait, while my husband laughs at my obsessiveness. if the weather alerts are upgraded, everyone goes in the kennels. that way, if there is a tornado, i just have to grab the kid and duck in the closet, knowing everyone is a safe as i can make them.

in alaska, we had an earthquake/volcano plan, including a list of shelters that would accept pets and rescue groups that would temporarily foster them if we had to evacuate. by being over prepared, i guaranteed that anchorage got no more than a light dusting of ash when mt redoubt erupted in ’09. lol

We are getting some strange storms here in the Interior, Mossling. You’d think with the humidity and air pressure and these wild winds that we were growing some tornadoes of our own. So if you do return to the Great Land, please bring your current knowledge…we may need it! ^_^
Glad to hear you were safe after all that!

I also have too many pets who need separate pens for a quick move. My worst fear is wild weather or a house fire, I don’t know if I can get everyone outdoors in time or to safe shelter.
