I am new to this forum and will soon be a proud mom to a Flemish Giant.  I am a dedicated animal lover and am adding a Flemish Giant to the furry family. I am currently the proud mother of

        2 dogs & 2 indoor cats

        Shiznit-Ratchi 6 years old RESCUE

Ralph-Heinz 57 14 years old (he is our lovable moldy oldy) RESCUE

        Talladega-Bengal Cat  2 1/2 years old

Ricky Bobby-6 months old RESCUED from death row

All of my furries are amazing and well socialized.

I have been a serious animal lover since I was about 5. I always loved animals. Iwas in 4H for about 7 years when I was young and showed rabbits.  I worked for a Vet for over 12 years but soon had to give it up as it did not pay enough to support me or my love for pets.  I did rescue for many types of pets for the length of time I worked for the vet.

My boyfriend thinks I’m a nut but really all I am is a sucker for a furry face.

I have been preparring for my Flemie for about 2 weeks now. Cleared out a 8X16 area in the backyard for a bunny run and hutch. He will have his own little sheltered house and private yard.  I am just so excited andcan’t wait to pick him up next week.  He is going to be soooooooo SPOILED ROTTEN!!!

Welcome to the forums! I’m glad you’re so passionate about rescuing animals – there are so many in need of good homes!

One thing – have you thought about having your flemmie live inside? We are a house rabbit community, and advocate bunnies living inside as part of the family. I know you’re preparing a nice protected area for him in your yard, but nothing can compare to seeing a bunny dash around the living room and snuggling in your bed! Having an indoor bunny as part of your family really lets you bond with their crazy little individual personalities, not to mention the dangers of weather, parasites, and possible predators outdoors. If you’re worried about the rabbit getting along with your other pets, plenty of cats and dogs get along with rabbits given some proper introduction and supervision.

Welcome! That’s quite a fur family you have!

I will also encourage you to consider indoor-living, in fact many rabbit rescues insist that any rabbit adopted out be housed indoors. It’s really only breeders who prefer outdoor hutches. Please take some time and do some research about indoor vs. outdoor housing options.

To get you started, some links…

While you stressed your commitment to rescue in your post (THANK YOU!), you did not explicitly say if you are adopting your rabbit.  If you are, this is fantastic, and it’s possible the bunny will already be neutered for you.  If you are purchasing the rabbit from a breeder or from a classified site online, chances are he won’t be neutered.  Here is a link about neutering and why this is necessary…
