I had been wanting to add a rabbit to our family for a while and 3 nights ago came across a listing on craigslist for a free female rabbit with cage and all supplies. I was first to respond so the man gave me the chance to pick her up first. I met him yesterday and got to bring home little Gabby. He said she was bought from a local pet store sometime last spring/summer. His daughter tired of the rabbit and she ended up living in their garage. With the summer coming on he decided to get rid of her since it would be too hot out there for her. He said the next lady to call him was the lady who sold her to the pet store. I’m so glad I called first so she wouldn’t just be a breeder the rest of her life but a loved family member.
She came with one of the typical too small pet store cages for rabbits or guinea pigs. He said she would only kick out the shavings or carefresh so it sounds like they just didn’t put it in the cage and said it was cleaned out once a week. He had another really small metal cage and asked if I wanted it. I took it immediately so I could take it home so no other animal would ever live in it again.
After picking her up I went to the closest pet store and got her some just pellet food without the “pretty” pieces of crap in it. I also bought her a litter pan and some rabbit safe litter. When we got home I set up our laundry room where she could safely hop around in there and have room to explore and be comfy. I put the litter pan with litter and some hay on top in the corner of the room. She immediately hopped into it to sit. She started nomming on the hay right away.
We had to go to town for some of the evening but when we returned home Gabby had already used the litter box. There were several poopies in it and a few outside of the box, but they were really close to it. When I cleaned the used part of the box out this morning there was pee where she had been going in it for that too. I’m very excited as she was not litter box trained at their house.
They had never had her spayed and in a few weeks I plan on taking her to my great exotics vet to have her spayed. I have not checked her sex but boy or girl we love this bunny already. She is slowly warming up to us and we’re being slow and gentle with her so she doesn’t get too overwhelmed over the new home she has now. My 7 year old daughter instantly fell in love with her and within minutes of sitting by Gabby she jumped into my daughter’s lap and nuzzled into her nightgown. I think with patience and time she will be a real cuddle bug. But if not, we’ll do what makes her comfortable.
I took some pictures of her yesterday morning after I got her settled into her new room. I’ll post them as soon as I figure out how to on this site. She is mostly black but has some white on the front feet, a dot of white on her nose and chest, and she has tufts of grey fur on either side of her tail. It almost looks like fur that is fixing to come out and it looks like little butt wings to me. She has some gray on the bottom of her feet too.
I look forward to learning as much as I can about my new little girl so we can spoil her the way she deserves.
