Hello all!
Me and my fiance are new to the bunny scene. Our little bunny is a lop-earred harliquin mix, and we got her from a rabbit rescue.
She is a little under a year, and her name is Nugget.
She is spayed, full of energy and loves to pull up our carpet, lol.
I am 26 years old, and my fiance is 24, we live in an apartment in CT.
It is great to meet you all, and if there is anything anyone wants to know feel free to ask. =)
Welcome!
You will love this site as there is so many wise people on here (and the cute bunnies are a big bonus).
Welcome! Nugget is so cute.
Hello.
Might I suggest getting Nugget some willow or grass mats? She might just be a little bit bored and needs something to dig at and throw about. My bun developed a carpet pulling habit but once I got her those mats, she can’t get enough of them.
Nuggest is so cute! My bunny Sammy does the carpet pulling thing too. What i found works is placing straw mats like MarkBun was saying in one or two areas that are their ‘favorite’, and then keep them away from the other areas by spraying perfume. Sammy hates the perfume. It also keeps him from under the couch, where he likes to pull out my couch lining… wonderful. lol
Oh wow, thank you for those suggestions, sometimes Nugget will be in a mood where she just runs under the couch as soon as I let her out and she starts pulling at the carpet down there. So I will have to try some sort of perfume, I just spray it about around the couch?
And I will definitely grab some of those straw mats, because I do not want to have to pay anything extra to the apartment complex for damaged carpets when we move, lol.
yeah I would just spray the perfume under the couch.. a couple spritzes should be enough. Because I’d like to avoid using perfume around Sammy ideally and also because within a couple days I always have to respray the perfume, I’m thinking of trying some sort of rabbit-approved bad tasting spray to spray on carpets and the parts of the couch he chews.. Haven’t gotten to that yet though lol
Welcome! She’s so beautiful!
I see the lop, where’s the harlequin? LOL! Or did the rescue know her parents?
My little one *points below* is under a year too, and boy does she LOVE the carpet!! I got a few rugs to place under the furniture she could get under, which stops her from rooting around and digging up the carpet in there, you just need to be careful to get a rug she can’t dig up too. For some reason my little diva only likes to dig when she feels enclosed or traps herself between two things, like behind the couch. So I pulled out the couch, and the digging back there stopped. I also put a cardboard box out over her favorite dig spot, so she can do and chew and dig on that, and I blocked the hidey spots with big boxes of stuff, so she can’t wiggle in somewhere. Otherwise I get catch her at it, and she’s starting to understand ‘no’, so I just firmly tell her no, and move her a few feet away from where she was digging. If she’s -really- in dig mode, I put her back in her habitat, to show her that digging means no free time. Make sure you do provide a dig or rip up toy, it’s important for them to have that. I also noticed that since I’ve supplied her with a toilet paper cardboard tube 24/7 to chew and eat and dig on, I have yet to have an instance of her carpet pulling!
Update: Just as I posted little miss decided to go start pulling up some carpet. x.x I guess she wanted to make a liar out of me! I told her it wasn’t okay and moved her to a different spot, and off she scampered ^_^
The reason that rabbits dig under furniture is that it is their instinct to try and increase the size of their warren so that they aren’t having to stoop too much. Now my girl liked to go under my bed, tear away the box spring lining and then hop into it and then continuously stomp. My best guess is that she was playing hide and seek and thought I couldn’t get to her. She was somewhat annoyed when I simply cut the lining off of the boxspring.
OH MY GOSH
what a wonderful name!!! ….and a cute rabbit to boot!
Welcome!
Thank you all for the advice, we are picking up some of the little mats later this week to try out. I am really hoping it works, she is really starting wreck some spots of carpet under the couch, lol. She does her military crawl under and before I can lore her out with some food, she is going to town on the carpet, lol.
And, I did not see her parent bunnies, I was just told she was harliquin/lop mix, lol, so who knows. =)
Whatever she is, she is very pretty!
i got some fooey or phooey hope i spelled it right. petsupermarket carries it in the cat section
that stuff is so potent the wires i sprayed it on 3 years ago still taste horrid.
a cable man came n got all upset thinking i had put stuff on the wires to poison him good thing i remembered the foey i sprayed on there years ago me being muslim he probably thought i stuck anthrax on it rofl
cotton has not actively chewed on those particular wires since. he had got the new speaker wire that waSnt sprayed. i ran out of the stuff n wont get anymore since i can taste it when i handle the wires and no i dont even stick my fingers n my mouth. you cant wash it off either. beleive me i tried
also NIC cubes work well to barricade the couch. other members can tell you the other names for those things
Oh very nice, I will look into that stuff, Bunnytowne! Thank you. =)
