        New to the forum/community!

I’ve had Scarlett for a few months now. She’s a black mini rex! She’s my first rabbit. I rescued her from the shelter and she seems to be adjusting well. I’m currently researching DIY habitat projects as I can’t imagine she’s very happy in her bunny cage (even though she gets a lot of time out of the cage.)

I’m currently considering converting a large dog crate or NIC cubes. I’ve also considered something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Critt…B001NJ0DAY So any thoughts or opinions on that would be great

          Hi and welcome!

I would recommend using the NIC cubes or the large dog crate over that chinchilla cage. First there is no ramp to get out of cage which means you would always have to help her in and out unless you built a ramp yourself. The cage is only 36 inches long, only 3 feet. For that price I would want a larger cage. And 3 feet isn’t very large at all, I would reccomend a dogxpen connected to the cage if you were only getting something 3 feet long. You could make a much larger cage for less money with grids or a dog exercise pen. You could pick up a used dog xpen at a garage sale or craigslist for 20$ sometimes. The ramps inside the cage are also not safe, a bunny could get their feet stuck in them. Rabbit feet are very different from chinchilla feet. I doubt a rabbit would use them and would just jump to the first platform and not be able to get to the other level of the cage.
If you are still more interested in a cage like you posted try http://www.leithpetwerks.com/ They have cages better designed for rabbits

Thank you so much for that info! I had originally planned on building her a ramp but didn’t realize the issues with the ramps. I really appreciate you taking the time to give me that info.

Alright, I’m officially on a quest for the a dog crate then. I’ll start with a crate, build a shelf and then maybe use NIC cubes to build an outside pen area for her.

            Thanks again!

Check out the habitats section too for other ideas. I really like the setups with just the dog exercise pen.  But it is always nice to have the dog crate if needed to enclose them more.

Check out RabbitPams newest setup. I love it.

                Welcome!

With the money you’ll spend on a dog crate and grids, you might as well just get an xpen as her habitat. They are easy, collapsible, amazing.

I do have cats though and worry about the open top. Scarlett and the cats get along fine and interact gently (infact, my one cat, Duck, thinks Scar is her baby and they snuggle and groom eachother!) but I still wouldn’t want the cats to have access to her area and an open pen would allow that…unless you have an idea on how to enclose the top?

I really appreciate the feedback. Coming from a strictly cat/dog family, I never expected to end up with a bun and while I do try to educate myself on the care of them, I really respect the opinions of other bun owners.

You can easily make a grid top (with 16 grids attached together) that can clip over the xpen. This way you can just remove it to go in and clean/feed. With a dog crate, you have to crawl inside to clean. That may or may not work for you. Check out the habitat section, you’ll see all kinds of examples.

Pet smart sells the x pens for rabbits. They are $40, they have a door and you can buy the tops and bottoms for $15 each. I love mine. Now that my bun free roams my kitchen, I folded the pen up and I use it to take him outside. Not to mention, I don’t have to worry about cats or hawks getting to him from the top. I love them!
