My wife and I recently became bunny parents.  Meet Lexi and Travis!

Travis is on the left, and Lexi is on the right.  We adopted them from a rescue a few days ago.  They’re still getting used to their new home, so they’re a little bit shy.  They are a bonded pair, and they are very sweet together.

Travis is more outgoing, so that’s why have more photos of him.  Even though Lexi is more withdrawn, she is actually the dominant one and will occasionally hump Travis to remind him (even though they are spayed/neutered)!

We’re new to bunnies, but we’ve been doing our best to be responsible bunny parents.  We have been learning a lot about diet, behavior, housing, etc.  Here is the pen they stay in when we’re asleep or not home:

The pen gives them roughly 25 sq. ft. of space.  But when we’re home, we open the pen up and give them access to the bunny-proofed portion of our apartment – around 175 sq. ft.!

You can’t see the full space in these photos, but they have access to the bunny room, kitchen, and hallway.  Doors and pet gates keep them away from dangerous areas (electric cords, etc.).

Even though they’re shy, they seem to really love their new home.  They like to explore and do binkies!  They usually retreat when we try to touch them, though.  So we’re being patient and giving them time to get comfortable with everything.  Each day, we try to make a little more contact.  We want them to get used to us, too!

Since we’re new to bunnies, we’re also new to this site.  It seems like a friendly community, and I’ve already found some useful tips on here.  I’m sure you’ll all be hearing a lot about Lexi and Travis from us.

Welcome to BB Noah and Rhonda! Lexi and Travis are such cuties! They will get more relaxed over time! They just need some time to get used to your routines and movements, their boundaries, etc. I am sure they will settle in just fine! Their pen looks great!

Welcome to BB What a cute pair you have! make sure to try the floor ignore technique to get them more comfortable with you. Thats when you just sit or lay on the floor, and pretend to ignore them. Don’t try to pet or anything, just let them come to you to investigate. Once they figure out you aren’t gonna pounce on them, they will be more relaxed with you

Welcome!! Lexi and Travis are very pretty bunnies! That’s a wonderful setup they have. I have to ask you about that tunnel that’s in their pen, the white 2 part one…what’s it made out of and where can I get one like it? Thanks, I’m sure they’ll have a ball with all the great things they have to play with! Here’s wishing you and your bunnies long, healthy happy lifetimes together!

It looks like something you could find in a Home Depot… some sort of pipe.

Welcome! They are adorable and what a great set-up! I love the pen, I’ve never seen one like that and it’s so much more attractive than the metal ones I have.

                      Welcome! Cute pair.

I think those pens are sold through Walmart. I saw them online somewhere, I think that’s where.

It does look nice! The tunnel and their hidey house thing are unlike anything I’ve seen before, very cool.

I second the idea of just sitting on the floor and reading a book. Even now that my rabbit is used to me, he likes when I sit on the floor to do my homework or whatever so he can climb on me. His favorite is when I sit indian style and lean forward over whatever I’m working on, he climbs up the “ramp” my back makes and sits on my upper back, sometimes planting his feet on my head. I’ve become the “bunny throne”. Anyways, he gets up on furniture with me now too but will always come running now if I sit on the floor and he sees me. Since he doesn’t usually respond when I call him over by name, at least I have a more reliable method to get him to come somewhere. I think most people here would tell you often it is more that you have to adapt to the bunny, rather than them adapting to what you want. Haha, seems to be true… but I am sure they will adjust and open up.

Looking forward to more photos of Lexi – cute face.

Thank you all for welcoming us!

We ordered the pen from amazon, and we LOVE it.  It is here – but after you click that link, you have to choose the “8 panel” size – it is not the “4 panel” one that shows by default.  Actually, we ordered this pen a couple of weeks ago when amazon was out of stock, so we purchased it from another seller for $82.  Now amazon has it for $59.23 with free shipping.  I highly recommend it!  We chose this pen because it is roughly 5’x5′, whereas most other pens are 4’x4′.  But if you need it to be smaller, you could always just use 6 or 7 of the 8 panels.

Sorry if I sounded like an advertisement for a second there!

When we’re home, we’ve started opening the pen WIDE open, like this:

So you see, when we set it up like that, the pen is really just there to keep them from chewing on the walls.  The white “tunnel” you see is a PVC pipe we got at Lowe’s.  It’s fairly heavy and won’t move around if they run through it.  Some other things seen in the photo include a ceramic tile (to lie on when the when the weather is hot), a grass hut, and toys from Binky Bunny.  You can’t see in the photo, but there is a hay bin and water bowl behind the pet carrier.  They also get pellets and salad veggies in the evening.

Here’s another photo of Lexi, just because I didn’t have as many photos of her:

They will approach us and sniff us if we lie on the floor, but they still don’t like to be touched.  It would help if we could figure out a treat to entice them, but they don’t seem interested in sweets.  They will usually eat raisins and pieces of apples, but they don’t get very excited and won’t come to us for those.  They have ZERO interest in peaches, blueberries, or rasperries.  So, we’re going to keep trying different things until we find something that they love.  I think we will try banana later.  All in moderation, of course… just small pieces!

No, you don’t sound like an advertisement at all. I love that it is larger. Another thing I like too is that it is plastic – my metal ones have rusted on the bottom where the rabbits have peed on them. Good idea to open it wide like that to prevent them from trying to chew on the floorboards.

                          Have you tried craisins?

They will eventually warm up to you as well.

It does look nicer. If you have a non-chewy couple I bet the plastic is great – I may look into getting one! So I guess your not-advertising worked.

I actually sometimes use pellets as treats. Healthier than some options, and the bunny loves them so much and gets them in small enough moderation every day they still work fine as a treat.

Thanks again for the welcomes! I just wanted to give an update. When I originally posted, Lexi and Travis had only been with us for 4 or 5 days. Now it has been a couple of weeks, and they’re warming up to us. Travis is much better about letting us pet him now! Lexi still doesn’t like being touched. We don’t know what her history is, so we’re just going to give her as much time as she needs to get used to us. Right now, the only time we really touch her is to pull out loose tufts of hair.

Travis is a little bit of a troublemaker, but we’re learning his habits and keeping him away from anything harmful. He wants to chew on walls, and he seems interested in digging/chewing our carpet… but he doesn’t dig/chew the area rug, which is much shorter (see photos above). So, we’re just making sure they are confined to the area rug unless we’re REALLY watching them. We’re in the process of getting a second area rug and changing their area around a little bit.

They’re so sweet together. They like to snuggle and groom each other, and they never fight.

Welcome! They are beautiful bunnies! Travis has those perfect dutch markings, Lexi looks like a toddler colored out of the lines… LOL! But seriously, they are both so pretty. Do you know if they’re siblings?

That is a very cool, pen, and I love your set-up. That looks like the perfect room for them, very clean, nothing to get in trouble with, and a lot of natural sunlight.
