        Good Morning!

I came across this forum and thought that it was a wonderful chance for me to learn from experienced bunny owners.  I’ve been talking to a breeder and am on the list for a bunny of my own.  Mean while, I’m reading up on the topic, getting my supplies in order, and learning everything I can.  My goal is to give this bunny the absolute best home I can.

I look forward to hearing any input or advice you can give.

        Take care,

        T

          Welcome!

Definitely do research before getting a rabbit. Many new rabbit people don’t realize the work and cost involved when they get a bun. For example, did you know that rabbits require fresh veggies everyday, must be spayed/neutered, and housed inside? Also… there are many rabbit rescues that are overflowing with homeless buns, so I would be remiss if I didn’t encourage you to adopt, rather than buy. You can do a Petfinder search for rescues in your area. A big benefit is that many rescues spay/neuter buns prior to adoption, so you can save hundreds of dollars by adopting.

Please ask if you have any specific questions, and check out rabbit.org for many great articles about rabbit care.

Welcome! Glad to hear you’re going to give some lucky bunny a home. If you’re looking for a young one, I’d suggest reading up on what happens when puberty hits and make sure you want to go through that experience…lol. It’s like combining a rowdy 2 yr old and a rebellious teenager in one small furry body!

I went through it with 2 of mine and I’ll go for the mature bunnies from now on. My four are all around 4 years old now, sweet, mellow (cough *except Lola* cough) and easy to get along with, but while they were going through the hormones it was wild. I can’t even believe they’re the same houligons!

            again, Welcome!

Welcome! I would have to agree with Beka….please consider adoption first!

                Welcome to the forum
There is always something new to learn when it comes to bunnies, it doesn’t matter if you’ve had them forever or not LOL.
I love cute ‘baby’ bunnies, but I will probably never have one, just WAY to much work LOL. And I find that as they mature they really do change, i had the sweetest young bunny i found outside when a neighbour abandond her. She hit maturity and she’s the biggest BAG! lol… but i love her all the same. (Oh and I had 7 rescue babies who covered my entire basement with urine, not fun! … bring on the neuters! lol).

Is your heart set on a particual breed or size? Are you getting just one, or looking at a pair?

Welcome aboard. It is a great forum, and you will learn lots of useful stuff here.

I agree with the others – it is good to be well-prepared, so it is a good thing you are reading up an the internet. I remember printing almost anything I could find on the web about litter training, so I was well-prepared. I just forgot to read up on the teenagepart, haha. Now that specific part came as a surprise.

Oh, and another thing. Since you are going for a baby and not adopting one from a shelter (I would recommend you to look at a local shelter though. Not only can you find a bunny that matches your personality, but you will also help not only the bunny you adopt, but many other bunnies by supporting the shelter), you should start saving up already for the neuter. It can be quite expensive depending on where you live, so might as well be prepared.

Hello! I’m new to bunnies myself, so I don’t have much input…but I will say from my experience so far: baby bunnies like to play really really loudly really really early in the morning! lol

My first instinct was, in fact, to adopt a rabbit from a local shelter or rescue.  I had contacted the SPCA and they suggested a prominent local rescue in the area who I contacted regarding my interest in finding a bunny.  They never responded back to my email.  I then left them a voice message and followed up with an adoption application.  Still NO reply.  Their website said they contact people within 3 to 4 business days.  I never heard anything.  That was a couple of months ago.  It’s was a huge disappointment and they are, from what I can tell, our only local rescue.  Since then, I’ve met a number of people that have gone through this particular rescue and said they were a nightmare to deal with.  Such a shame.

Anyway, I’m still reading up on all things bunny.  I’ve taken your advice and dug up all the information i can on bunny puberty.  I’ve also started the process of gathering the proper bunny supplies and interviewing local vets that actually regularly care for bunnies. My other half says it’s as if I’m preparing for our first child and not a bunny.  LOL…My pets ARE my children.

Thanks for all of yor advice.

What a lousy shelter. Such a shame that they do such a good work, and then are so unprofessional so that no one wants to adopt a bunny from them.

So, what kind of breed are you getting?

We will be thrilled to see pictures once you get your bunny home!

That is such a shame you had no luck with the shelter. Another member from Canada just had a similar experience. The shelter was mainly for cats and dogs but there was a separate bunny room. The rabbits were cared for by volunteers who were not always there. The other paid staff of the shelter were completely unhelpful. I doubt they even passed on this members enquiries.

Do you have any rabbit specific rescues in your area? Petfinder is good for finding places that may have rabbits, some may even be rescues ran out of a private home which you wouldn’t know of otherwise (that’s the kind of rescue where I got Max!)

UGH! Ok. Had a pc crash and didn’t realize how much I rely on my “favorites” to keep track of things like forums that I’m on.

Anyway, since my last post I actually visited a couple local shelters that house rabbits to no avail. The primary adoption/rescue is our area House Rabbit society which is who I had the total lack of communication with.

Long story short, I now am the proud mama of two lion head boys. Wicket and Spirit. They are rotten as can be, both fixed, and totally bonded to each other.

My home office is officially rabbit proofed thanks to the wonders of cord covers and NIC cube barriers. They have a two story Critter nation cage that has been completely modified for them but they have free run of the office and use the cage to sleep and eat only… and to beg for their morning craisens since the second level puts them at eye level with me when I’m at my desk.

My favorite bunny moments are in the mornings when I have my coffee with them and they run the uber laps around the room until one slides to a stop into the other.

Current hurdle I’m trying to get over…the boys currently won’t let me touch them since they are pissed still about going to the vet. Geez.

Congrats on the new members! Glad you’ve found some buns to welcome into the family. I sort of ended up with a bun without really thinking or researching. I wasn’t planning on getting one but rescued Scarlett for fear of her having to go to the shelter. And I’ve seen the way the buns at our shelters are taken care of…kind of just thrown in a little pen all together and have very little attention and very little space. I’m learning as I go and obviously am loving this site and forum!

Anyways, just wanted to say congrats! hope to see ya around.

Welcome back. lol Great to hear you have a bonded pair. That really is such a shame about your local HRS. Seems they may have been many lost opportunities to place some of their rabbits.

Well now that you officially are a bunny mum, I’ll start off the official binky bunny chant which is:

                                  “Pictures! Pictures! Pictures!”

My boys are my little angels. I call them the Fuzz Butt Brothers. I got them both very young and they bonded quickly. I also got them both fixed as soon as they were of age and ready so I think that’s been my saving grace with keeping them bonded. I added some pics to my profile album. I’ll try to add some from when they were little fluff balls.

They are slowly coming back around. Spirit is back to sniffing and head butting my feet and Wicket is starting to let me scratch his head again…well briefly. I’m trying to be patient and consistent. Wish me luck.
