So, after having just gone through GDV surgery at the end of May, it looks like it’s back to the vet for my 12 year old dog, Taiku. He is finally gaining enough weight and apparently has enough energy that he’s displaying some bawdy behaviour again. Poor Shadow, (my other male dog-14 years), who has to bunk with him, is not up for any funny business. (Taiku is trying to show dominance. I’ve had enough of that with the bunnies, thank you very much.)

So to keep Taiku from hurting Shadow and possibly himself, I am talking to the vet tomorrow about the possibility of getting him neutered, finally! >.< I know, risky business...but I think if he got through the anesthesia that had him down for the GDV, he can make it through a little procedure like this. (Seperate lodgings would make for a cold winter for both of them.) If doc doesn't think he can handle it, we'll just have to look into something else.

        Perhaps saltpeter. 0_o j/k

Anyone here have experience with neutering an older dog and what can be expected? Does it leave them in a great deal of pain, for instance? I would figure it’s easier on the male dog than for an older female to be spayed. We’ve waited this long because 1) we didn’t have any intact females left in the yard and 2) most of the time when we wanted to have him done, cash was pitifully short.

I’m betting he’ll make it through just fine. He’s an ornery old bugger.

They could’ve been. They are MacKenzie River Huskies, which are a freight dog line. But Shadow was abused at weight pull as a pup and was afraid of sled as a result. Plus they are both too old and fragile in the back now. I have only strapped both boys up once many years ago and they nearly dragged me to Timbuktu, so I gave it up…lolz! ^_^

Poor MimzMum’s creatures! I, as usual, don’t have any helpful advice, but send your canine brood head-pets and back-scratches! (I’m going to have to Google that breed…my parents used to show dogs, so I’m relatively familiar with various breeds, but that one’s beyond my meager knowledge!)

I’m not sure if neutering is going to make a difference in the dominance behavior. Even females hump to show dominance.

Well, I still haven’t heard back from my vet. She won’t make the appointment till she’s talked with me and she was in surgery all day.
What we’ve worked out is there must be a female in heat in the neighborhood and it’s marking territory. So when the boys go out to pee, they pick up scent and well…you know what happens. >.<
*sigh* Maybe I should just arrange a date for Taiku…lolz.
NOT!!!!! 0_o This bloodline stops RIGHT here. I am not ever getting another dog in my life, I swear! Only bunnies for me from here on out.

He goes in tomorrow a.m. early. Then hubby comes home to get me around noon for Fiver’s visit…then at around 4 or so the dog should be ready for pickup. Ugh. I goofed with the timing, forgot about Fiver’s appointment but the hubby said to leave it.
Lots of back and forth 30 miles both ways…we’re going to be beat to a pulp! >_< I wish we lived closer to town!

Things went well for both of them today. I think the dog is quite sore after his ordeal, but he came through it well. He’s on restricted activity for the next two weeks, and I don’t think he’s really going to want to do much anyway. He really was too old for this procedure…I feel so bad. he looks like I took all his zest for life away.
Will update Fiver (bun) in the other thread.
