Does anyone feed their bunnies Yucca Root? I always have some around and I noticed that yucca is listed as an ingredient in bisquits for buns. Also, do you know what it does for buns? Is it good for them and how?

        Thanks.

http://www.adoptarabbit.com/articles/toxic.html   this site lists it as toxic.  and wikipedia (under “Yuccas”) also says it is poisonous to rabbits.  does anyone else have info on this?  i’m not even 100% sure what this plant is…

edited:  and i’m not sure what you mean by what it “does” for them?

Oh wow! I’m really glad I checked with this forum before I decided to let them try it!

I’m wondering if the Yucca Root is different from this product https://binkybunny.com/Default.aspx?tabid=55&List=1&ProductID=65 or if the ingredient “yucca powder” in this product http://auntieems.ca/store/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=31&osCsid=uap4rnn19em2oaij6g58u216g3 is different also?

What I meant by “what does it do for them?” is it good for their digestive tract, fur, eyes, bones, etc.

i hope someone can come along and either confirm or correct this info… i can’t view the Auntie Em site b/c i don’t have an account. as far as the BB wheel, i’m thinking it is okay b/c it is dried. i don’t know this for a fact, like i said, i’ve never even heard of yucca, but it’s just my guess. BB would never sell anything that was not 100% safe. some woods are very toxic for rabbits when fresh, and are perfectly safe when thoroughly dried out.

the very best thing for bunnies is their unlimited timothy hay, healthy veggies, and pellets to fill in the nutritional gaps.

Yucca is often used as a treatment for arthritis.  The yucca wheelie is the fiberous root and is safe for your rabbit to chew. I am going to do more research and find out what parts of the plant are toxic.  I *believe* that the root is O.K. but the other parts of the plant are not.

I agree w/ Scarlet.  I thought that the root is ok but the actual plant is not.

Thanks skunklionshow. From further reading, it seems that most of the tannins (substance that lends medicinal/toxic properties) are in the fresh blossoms of the plant and the leaves as well. Native Americans used it instead of soap!

I wasn’t aware that yucca is used for arthritis….which I have, thank you for that bit of info and link!

I appreciate all of your help. I keep a lot of different greens, veggies and fruit at all times and was just curious about this, I want to be able to give my buns a variety especially since they’re already in my fridge!

Sorry it took me so long. I’ve been in and out all day. Yucca is a name of a plant species. It does not name ONE plant. The yucca chew we sell IS SAFE! I, for the life of me, can’t remember the name of the type of yucca plant it comes from.  The chew is not part of the foliage that can can sometimes cause digestive upset if eaten fresh, and if you have a live decorative yucca plant in your home, you need to keep it out of your pets reach.    Originally, before selling them, I had heard about the “toxicity” of yucca, but after checking with my vet, researching and talking to the distributor, I have found that “toxicity” to just be a generalization and blanket warning that shouldn’t be there as it does cause this same kind of confusion.  If you have it in your home as live plant, then you need to be careful, but the dried yucca chew toys are safe. I have my notebook of specific facts about yucca that will help you feel better about the the dried yucca chews that are sold for bunnies. (I’m not at home right now, but when i get there, I will post my info about yucca.)

Joey, you were asking how it is good for rabbits. Some rabbits have a harder time with hard woods, especially those with teeth problems, like my Rucy. The dried yucca wood is softer which attracts healthy chewing for bunnies. Now some bunnies don’t like yucca, some do, so that is why I really liked the yucca wheelie because it offers both the dried apple stick and the yucca chew together.

I’ll be back to update about Yucca facts when I get back to the house.
