Need some serious BB vibes right now. I’m a very worried Bunny Mommy.
Yesterday, at breakfast, Olivia didn’t want to eat. She was showing gas symptoms but I wasn’t very worried because she does that once in a while, I give her a dose of simethicone and she perks right back up. She also had lots of poos during the night so I figured she was just a bit gasy. After 3 hourly doses of simethicone, lots of tummy rubs and a dose of metacam (I had some left from Bindi’s last tummy upset), she just kept getting worse. Early afternoon, I called the vet and thankfully my rabbit vet was in so she said to bring her right in.
She took an x-ray and gave her more pain meds. The X-ray revealed no blockage, a small amount of gas but a very distended tummy. Her tummy was huge on the X-ray. She said for unknown reasons, her tummy just hasn’t been moving along the way it should (which surprised me because of the normal amount of poos) and they would have to keep her on IV fluids, motility drugs and continue monitoring her stomach. She said it could take up to 48 hours and it’s good that I brought her in right away but it’s like a horse with colic, sometimes you can never tell the outcome (we’re both horse people so we know the dangers of that). I was so upset. I gave her lots of kisses before I left. One of my good friend is the vet tech so I know she is in good hands. I was not expecting her to have to stay. I cried all the way home.
Around 6:00 pm the vet called me at the end of her shift because she knew how worried I was. The good news is that Olivia passed two giant poops but they were hard and looked more like dog kibble than normal bunny poos. And she ate a bit of greens. That made me feel a lot better. Olivia is a tough cookie and I’m trying to remain positive. I’m really hoping I will get a call that she can come home today. If she has to stay again tonight, I will go visit her this afternoon. Maybe seeing Momma will cheer her up.
It was really hard because I’ve never had a bunny away for the night before. Whenever I walk in the bunny room I expect her to run out for treat begging.
The past week I did find it strange that Olivia hasn’t been as hyper as usual. Mostly, just sitting around during out-time.
Get Well Vibes for Olivia please!
It’s so very upsetting that these things can happen even with the super careful diet and wonderful care and attention my buns get. I was just at the vet on Friday with Bindi for crying out loud. Hoping the vet goes easy on the bill too since my hubby is on winter lay-off right now.
