› Forum › THE LOUNGE › Easter Bunnies….it’s started.
I noticed on a local advertising website that the “Get a Bunny for Easter” type ads are starting to surface. Here’s some lines from one I just saw. It had an unfortunate typo in the title too “Eatser Dwarf Lop Bunnies”
”We have 2 litters of dwarf lops that will be ready for Easter”
”These rabbits are handled from birth and are very tame, making excellent pets, especially for children.”
I happen to think they make wonderful pets. Sure, get one at Easter. Children would enjoy them too. I’m not being sarcastic here…There is some truth in this BUT I would add the need for EDUCATING oneself on having a rabbit as a pet.
Does anyone know the title of the thread we had going last year on posting info about rabbit care on these advertising sites? I think the time is now to start the unofficial binkybunny campaign.
“Eatser” YIKES!
Sorry, no I don’t know the title. I hadn’t joined by last Easter, but I’d love to get involved in the bunny education campaign.
I know I posted a few craigslist threads about how NOT to get a bunny for a child. In fact we just refreshed them two weeks ago. I think if you search the Lounge section you’ll find them, but not sure of their titles. Lemme see if I can hunt them up….
Oh God. I love Easter but I hate how all the poor little bunnies have to suffer becouse of people who just don’t get it. It’s gotten bad here in South East Texas to. There’s ads for baby bunnies all over the store. I hate it. So yes I to would love to help any way I can.

Here’s the one I was talking about a week or so ago. I actually just got my bumper sticker two days ago from make mine chocolate. I put it on top of one of those bank magnet bumper things and its right in the middle of the back of my car. It says “A week after Easter the candy will be forgotten, and sadly so will the rabbit. Make mine chocolate!” then the website. It came up to only $5…the last thing I bought before giving up shopping for lent. haha
I also started posting the “real” easter bunny ads on Craigslist in my area. So far I have gotten many good responses saying thanks. It’s about time to repost though..I’m seeing the “will be ready for Easter!” ads also… :/
Poor babies
Oh, and I also saw an ad for “meat rabbits…$8 live”
I want to cry everytime I think about it..
Thanks Kiley! That thread has links in it from MimzMum (thanks!) to the thread from last Easter.
Thanks, Kiley, that’s the one that has both my links in it.
I know of people in my neighborhood who breed and I’m sure there’s going to be a rabbit glut here by the end of March, which is when Easter is this year.
I wish I could save them all. I wish I could convince these people not to breed. Very few folks here see rabbits as house companions.
Oh no! ahhhh! Im going to get on gumtree and make an ad . Make mine chocolate.
$8 live rabbits?! Thats awful. theres this show on fox at the moment called boys and girls alone. they put 10 year old boys and girls in a house by themselves for 2 weeks and they have to fend for themselves. They have chooks and rabbits in pens in the garden, and on the ad they have dead rabbits and are trying to skin them so they can cook it. Makes me sad making 10 year olds do that when they could just buy meat from the shop.
I’m taking a fairly soft approach. I don’t want to attack breeders as such. It’s what they do and they have a legit right to advertise. I just want people to know what rabbits can be (the positives and the commitment) and to be aware that many get given up when problems arise.

I feel like legit, responsible breeders shouldn’t advertise bunnies for Easter, period. Or other holidays, or birthdays, etc. It’s fine to advertise that you have bunnies for sale, but I don’t think it’s cool to sucker people in with holiday pets.
That’s true, Elrohwen.
I’m not quite sure what you guys are up to? Do you post ads telling people to think twice? ‘Cause I could do that too here, but I’m not sure if that is what you are doing really First, I should find out if easter bunnies really are an issue here though.
I have 2 other friends that own bunnies of their own. We are all around the ages of 20-22.
We both agree that bunnies are NOT FOR CHILDREN AT ALL!!
We agreed that rabbits hate being picked up (there are exceptions of course) and children will most likely end up picking up the rabbit by the ears or the wrong way. Also, the family might not know what to do after the rabbit goes into puberty and goes a little nuts…
I think that people need to realize that despite their cute demanor, the rabbits are not toys! They need lots of care, love and they need to be put before yourself!!
My advice is: Get your child a bunny plush
I got constantly flagged off of CL last year and got called a bunny hater. I don’t know if I can stomach that again.

What is a CL, if you don’t mind me asking?
Craigslist
Ugh… I just wish people didn’t just want to ‘profit’ off of bunnies, but make sure they went to a great home…
im posting adds all over kijiji right now, spidy i stole that pic though it would be perfect
can i recomend binky bunny for info on rabbits? im not sure if thats allowed or not
Ugh, Easter is now just one of those holidays where stupid people decide to get a bunny or chick to go along with the theme. I worry about the poor things :[.
Just remember that the Easter bunny died for your sins, and comes back every year to hide eggs, just don’t eat the chocolate ones. He didn’t hide any chocolate ones
LOL! Love that last one Spidey! It is sad that people buy bunnies for the kids, even though I was one of those kids, but at least my parents accepted that responsibility of taking on the bunny. I wish that there was a shelter/rescue dedicated only to find homes for bunnies and pet stores were not allowed to sell them. Leave it up to more professional bunny handlers to help educate families for responsible care and offer a safe place for bunnies to go. If I ever win the lottery…I will set one up…but until then I’ll just hope for the best for all the future homeless bunnies that they will find a safe forever home soon!
some people are just really stupid, they make me sooo angry! if i dont respond again for awhile its because ill be in jail for manslaughter! no, i wont ACTUALLY hurt someone but…, im attaching the add i put on kijiji, i got a reply from somone whos , EXTREAMLY RUDE and clearly doesnt care about their bunnies very much and i mean BUNNIES! they own 30 rabbits that have NEVER been to vet! e-mail below:

Wow u no ur rabbit stuff…not!
I have been raising rabbits since I was 4. They aren’t difficult to take care of and they are actually a great starter pet for kids. I have about 30 rabbits right now so I would no. Oh, and I have never once taken a rabbit to the vets or for shots and mine are fine, so go get a life and f*** off!!! |
why do people have to be so cruel to their animals?
I changed my mind.. I don’t want chocolate easter bunnies. I want easter sockbunnies.
Sockbunnies, Monkeybun? what’s that? LOL
MirBear, that person has horrible grammer… It bothers me. His/Her intelligence level seems very poor. I’m sorry, I do not believe that rabbits are great starter pets for children. That person really needs a reality check.
In the summer, my boyfriend works as a baseball camp teacher. There is this field right next to a zoo, and it is nicknamed “Ton a bunny field,” because idiotic people drop off bunnies that they no longer want. The bunnies multiply, and therefore, hop onto the baseball field.
It angers me and makes me so upset!
they are horrible starter pets for children my little sister is an example,.. my mom got her hershey as her ‘starter’ pet and within a month my sister got bored and now its a good thing if she feeds hershey once a day, shes getting better though. she feeds hershey fresh hay fruit and veggies and pellets daily
Miranda, don’t worry too much about replies like that. If you read the 1st sentence and can see it’s going to be mean, just delete it. You may have made 10 people think more carefully compared to 1 person you upset. You’re out there trying to make a difference already… I haven’t even posted anywhere yet! Good for you.
Edit: Mir, I sent you a msg – if you can check when your next on. ta Also, why would the responder brag about never taking them in for shots? I didn’t think rabbits needed shots in Canada anyway….
Anyone with grammar like that shouldn’t own a pencil, much less 30 rabbits…if that’s even true.
I have to wonder how many people will answer these ads we put up this way, just to get a rise out of us. Nasty people have an annoying surplus of time on their hands to make sensitive people miserable with.
Sometimes I’ve even wondered about the random folks who post here who put something nasty about ‘their rabbit’… and then these people disappear within a few posts and never show up again. Since it’s so easy to believe just about anything you read on the net, and since most of our members like to be helpful even in what seems an impossible situation…I think a lot of drive by harassment happens this way and we wind up getting sniped verbally.
However, I don’t think that should stop anyone here from posting the bunny caution ads. Just be prepared for idiots to answer and be obnoxious.
I start my own personal anti-Easter Bunny campaign about a month before Easter which includes putting up flyers around my city. This year, for the first time, I’m gonna post on Kijiji as well. When I post my ads, I’ll copy them here so you can see what I wrote.
If we all do a little something to spread the word we could really reach far and wide seeing as though we have members from all over Canada and US and other countries as well.
Most ads I see for Easter Bunnies or pet stores are promoting the smaller, cuter breeds like Dwarfs and Mini-Rex’s. Anyone who knows about rabbits knows that these are the breeds that are probably the least like the ideal Easter Bunny (soft, sweet and cuddly). And the worst breeds for kids. Result= unhappy families dumping the bunny in the wild or at a shelter.
the person is probably one of those breeders you hear about that end up selling sick bunnies
i had actually sent him/her an e-mail back:
what are you 5? very mature very very mature!

If I can-it’s EASY to get published at your newspaper. So can I encourage you all to write telling about what a commitmene bunnies are? And perhaps after Easter where you can get info to care for your new bunny? (www.binkybunny.coom http://www.rabbit.org) I do this every year and I get great response
Do you mean like in letters to the editor, K&K? That’s the only thing I think our local news allows us ‘regular citizens’ to add to…or do you mean directly into the classifieds?
