zoiks! toxic plant?

i chased baby down the hall last night because she had a plant leaf in her mouth… little devil.  this morning i notice 2 leaves on the plant looked nibbled.  i have no idea what kind of plant this is so i don’t know how to tell if it’s toxic.  what signs should i be looking for?

right now she’s behaving & pooping & eating as usual. here’s a couple pics of the plant incase any one recognizes it.

ps… i’ve been spraying the girls to keep them away but will put up an nic fence soon if they keep returning to it!

Crud I’ve no idea what kind of plant that is. I would imagine if nothing happens within six hours then probably not poisoned. But watch her and be ready to zip to an emergency vet!! I’ll see what I can find on the internet…

It looks almost like eucalyptis, but the leaves are too shiny, and it looks sort of like an aloe, but the leaves aren’t wide enough. The leaves actually look sort of philodendron-y, but the thick stalk makes me think otherwise. o____o I’m at a loss. I found a “houseplant identification forum” and I thought I’d repost it there, but… the whole forum ended up being nothing but links to porn. If I find anything, I’ll post it. (Plants, that is. Not porn.)

I agree with K&K, looks like a Schefflera to me too.

This plant is on the toxic list, but so are oak leaves, and mine manage to pull in an oak leaf or two now and then that we track into the house from the back yard.  Jut make sure she is acting normally, eating, the usual stuff.  A small amount like that should be OK.

If that is the plant…what I’ve read is that the sap is slightly poisonous, but not the bark/leaves…Anyways just keep watch, nothing to do otherwise. If you do take her in as she gets sick-bring the plant in!!

yup… thats the plant.   i’ll keep a close eye on her & get that nic fence built.  good thing i just picked up more nic grids.  i should buy stock in that stuff… my house will soon be entirely covered by it

I am almost positive it is an Umbrella Tree. We used to have one that was over 6 feet in our house. I agree with everyone else here, my uncle is a argricultural botanist but he knows alot about all plants as well. He told us when we had ours that it is toxic in large doses. I think that she will be fine because she has only eaten a really small amount, but keep an eye on her just to be sure, I called to ask him about what might happen he said the symptoms are usually vommiting (since buns can’t vomit I think it will mostly be the second symptom to watch for..) and diarreha and in humans a skin rash if they injest enough. Hope this helps!

thanks!  she’s still seeming normal & i’m positive it was only a very small amount.  neither bun bun was in the room with the plant without me being there & it’s in my full view.  i just bought it & so of course after moving it the plant was reacting & dropping a few leaves.  thats haw baby got one… she did a drive-by & scooped it on her way out.  goof.

It actually looks kind of like a young ficus to me, but I’ll defer to the more knowledgeable members of the board. Remember that even small amounts, to something the size of a bunny, can be dangerous. I will keep good thoughts and prayers going for you that Baby remains unharmed.

My son did that to me more times than I care to remember when he was little. We used to have wild chive growing in our yard up here…well he heard us talking about how nice it would be to harvest, so when he sees one in bloom, he takes the flower and shoves it in his mouth right in front of me! I went bananas trying to find out how dangerous it was since we live 30 miles from the nearest hospital!

Mimzy, you’re so right about the green == food. Humphrey totally freaked me out the other day wih plants, too– I was letting him run around the kitchen and all of a sudden I heard crunching– I looked under the table and watched the tail end of a withered leaf that had fallen off one of our plants disappear into his mouth. o___o I was pretty freaked out, because I had no idea what kind of leaf he had eaten, but the silly bugger ended up nothaving any issues. I swear this rabit could eat Brillo pads and not die. Nothing phases his digestive system.

Brillo pads…lolz! My son’s dog is the same way…God forbid we leave garbage out even tied up in the back of the truck because if he gets loose he WILL find it and then everything is at least sampled, if not consumed! He actually had an S.O.S. pad (aptly named!) in his mouth one day when I caught him with his nose in the trash.
Boy did he spend time in the doghouse then! ^_^

Yeah, Humphrey’s more like a dog than a rabbit. He even does the “sowwy, mommy” puppy eyes and cower when I tell him No! It’s pretty hysterical. XD

My severly underweight cat, Katie, has a hankering for plastic.  She eats it like it’s a steak.  Anytime you open anything new in the house she comes running for the plastic that is usually used to seal things.  Her favorite are plasticky strings like you find on pom poms or bike streamers…it’s like spaghetti to her.  We got a centerpiece that had some kinda of hay/grassy/straw pieces in it.  She was sneaking up on the table to grab a piece and eat it in another room of the house.  I can always tell when she’s been munching b/c it looks like strings or plastic wrap mixed up in vomit! It’s lovely!!!!

Good grief skunklionshow! Streamers and stuff like that must do a terrible number on your cats’ insides! That’s why things like tinsel and string are so bad for them…the peristaltic motion of the intestines rubs long stringy things back and forth like a saw inside their stomachs. It’s a wonder you haven’t had to rush your kitty to the vet for eating that junk!
Although I must say, my cat also has a liking for the little plastic ties from the milk jugs…but she never eats them. She wants us to toss them for her so she can fetch them, like a dog. It’s funny as heck. ^_^
BBM, I take it Baby has survived her encounter with the whatever-it-was? (And you too, I hope!)

My bunnies constantly are trying to eat all kinds of odd things – Kramer in particular will eat pretty much anything with an interesting texture. He’ll try a bite of anything – including the coffee table, the floor, the linoleum, the magazines etc…. I hope that Baby is still OK!

all is well here… for both buns.  pinky ate some of the forbidden ‘fruit’ later on & so both of them were on watch for potential tummy troubles.  i now have an nic fence around the plant because dispite my best efforts the sneaky lil devils would still manage to get in a bite otherwise.  i swear they can tell the second my attention is distracted!

So glad Pinky & Baby are doing fine. 

Mimz:  I too am surprised that Katie has never ended up at the ER vet!  We joke that she had an unofficial gastric bypass when she had her pyometric uterus removed, they ended up removing some of her intestine & stomach in the process b/c the infection had spread to other parts of her body.  They had difficulty tying off the left overs w/o them just crumpling up from all the trauma.  Poor Baby!  That’s why she doesn’t weigh more than 5 lbs and yet another reason to SPAY your pets!!!!!
