So the last 2 days, I’ve been bedding Zeus with Aspen shavings because I hurt my back this weekend and couldn’t carry the brand new 40lb bag of wood pellets in my car up to the 3rd floor of my apartment.  This morning, I discovered Zeus had peed OUTSIDE his litterbox sometime last night!  He hasn’t had an accident since I was litter training him months and months ago!

So at 7am, I was dragging the 40lb wood pellets bag up to my apartment.  Luckily my back is feeling better today!  Spoiled bun, he’s using the box faithfully again now that there’s wood pellets back in there.

At least he prefers the cheapest bedding available!  And I do like the wood pellets, too.

Do your buns have a bedding/litter material preference?  How can you tell what they prefer?

Bun refuses to use woodstove pellets. Her royal hiney only wants carefresh. So I still buy a bag for her. I try using Aspen with her too and only the pee ends up in there and 50% of the poop. Sigh.

My 3 all liek the carefresh… Miss Monkey would likely plot my demise if I changed to anythign else.

I have to say that I am very lucky because my buns will use any litter. Their litter tray must be kept to their standards of cleanliness, however, to prevent pee protests.

My bun will use anything too. I’ve used carefresh most of the time with him but I wanted something cheaper as he seems to do his duty every 2 minutes. He has to have a clean litter box or he will let you know by pooping and peeing all around it. I tried shredded newspaper and he didn’t have a problem with that but yuck! I won’t do that again. I just bought some paper pellets because I wanted to see if he would be okay with those since I am really wanting to switch to woodstove pellets but didn’t want to buy a 40 lb bag only to have him reject it. So far so good!

We use Aspen, Carefresh, and now Feline Pine.

We were using the Aspen alone. It was cheap but didn’t help with the smell at all. So we decided to add some Carefresh with it. What I do is mix the Aspen and Carefresh in a large garbage can which I keep in the garage.

But in a different thread, someone mentioned Feline Pine pellets for odor control. So we tried them and wow, do they work good. Right now we’re still using the Aspen and Carefresh mix, but I’m sprinkling a thin layer of FP over top of it. Once we finish off the mix then we’ll just stick with FP.

In the pans we use a thin screen to catch the poo. This keeps the buns from mixing up the poo and litter every time they jump in and out. So all we have to do is lift out the screen, dump the poo, then use a small scoop to dig out the pee clumps. This way we waste virtually no clean litter at all.

Off topic, I found these cool pans on Petco’s site while looking for Feline Pine. They’re made for dogs. I bought one to try out for Addie and Ben. On occasion one of them well pee right outside their old pan. I was thinking they were just being lazy and didn’t want to jump in, so maybe this pan will solve the problem.

That’s a very big box! I like it! Do you just do a very, very thin layer in it?

It’s big, but good for 2 rabbits. Here’s Nessa is it. She’s a big girl; about 11 pounds. But you can get an idea of the pan size. And yeah, just a thin layer. Of the mix just about 1 to 1 1/2 inch.

That’s a great box for multiples! You could fit two 11lb buns in there!!!

My guys don’t seem to have a preference.

Hannah started digging at the boxes a few months ago, so I had to put grids over them. I don’t think she liked the grids initially, so I made sure to cover them with a lot of hay, but now she doesn’t mind them even if they’re exposed.

We’ve tried almost every different type of litter, and Nibbles didn’t care one way or another.  I prefer CareFresh because it controls the odor better than the others.  Maddie doesn’t seem to have a problem with it either, so we’re sticking with CareFresh.  Plus it comes in cool colors!
