Well we have had Daxter neutered for about 3 weeks now, he has been recovering however i have noticed he has become drastically lazy, Hopscotch did become more lazy than before after his neuter but not to Daxters extent, he will only get up for food or if it is a vital mission lol he is also eating alot more hay than he did before and seems abit skittish, you know like he is abit jumpy? I took him to the vet and she said he is fine, his wounds have healed perfectly and she cant feel anything wrong or anything so she told me to keep an eye on him for the usual not eating/pooping but other than the laziness and the hay he seems pretty much his usual self, has anyone else ever found this? Hopscotch is pretty much how he was before the neuter just maybe 10% more lazy? Whereas it seems to have totally changed Daxter. Im sure its nothing medical as like i said the vet assures me he is fine, just wondering if any of you guys have ever found this?

        Thanks Guys.

everybun has a different personality. i agree, you know what to look for to indicate illness… if he seems healthy and happy, i would not worry too much about it.

yeah im pretty sure he isnt sick, its just u know i feel like ive killed his personality by having him neutered, he was such a character before and now he does nothing but lie there and i was just wondering if anyone else had ever found this after neutering?

Yeah, I had this with Charlie, I thought I’d killed his rabbitude and it was an awful feeling – like I’d betrayed him or something!

He wasn’t himself for a while, maybe 2 or so months then he bounced back to himself again. I took it to mean he was really mad at me for gettng his manly bits chopped off and then literally one morning I woke up & he was back to his old self again. I’m such a loser that I cried – I was so happy.

              {{{{Daxter}}}}

Hope he gets back to his old self soon – I’m sure he will

Mimzy has turned into a lump bun. He was neutered back in December and now he’s just a little couch potato. He would rather just sit in his night pen all day instead of come out and play in the xpen. Doesn’t seem to have done a thing for his rabbitude, I still get oinked and wuffled at and he nipped at me this morning when I came in to take him out for exercise.

Same old Mim…just a little slower. ~_~ And snarlier.

i am so glad its not just me! i felt really guilty like ‘omg i broke him!’ but i hope he bounces back, i would love him dearly no matter if he is running around or just lying there i just was very sad that he looked lazy and generally not himself, i guess it just shows how different every bunny really is because there was very little change in him after his op.

Daxter loves you! don’t worry! on a side note: this is another great advantage of adopting an adult, already altered bunny. you see their “finished personality” if that makes sense?

yes i agree its very hard to see such a personality change, i would advise anyone to get an adult neutered bun rather than a baby as its so much more stressfull lol

Digger had only been neutered for a week and so far the only change I’ve seen in him is that he doesn’t spray any more…thank Goodness!

I know what you mean, K&D. Sometimes I wonder what happened to my lively little Mim. He used to be much more active and interested in things in general, now he just seems to exude an air of “I vant to be let alooooone!”

However, now that he has Fiver to investigate, he is coming out of himself a bit again. I only hope it keeps up!

yeah maybe he is just looking for some bunny shaped company. Daxter has thankfully been abit more active today, i took him outside and he binkied at me YAY! i havent seen him binky since before his neuter so that was awesome, i wonder if he is an outdoorsy bunny, i know hopscotch just sits on the grass looking miserable outside affraid to move, so i dont take him out much but Daxter enjoys running round nibbling the grass etc.

Don’t know about bunnies, but with cats their personality can change when they are fixed at an older age (even if it’s 10 mo compared to 4…) My cat was obnoxiously vocal, but after being spayed she hardly ever meowed unless she was getting a treat.

I think you may have hit on something there, K&D.

Mimzy was an abandoned bunny and definitely likes doing his binkies outdoors, having spent most of his first months in the yard/Bun-Galow. Pip is more of an indoor bun and is very nervous outside. But they both have to be kept in an xpen/hutch wherever they are, they are easily spooked buns.

Fiver however is totally different from the other two. He is SO good on my bed and won’t mess it, nor does he try to get off of it. In fact, last night he just flopped next to me like he was going to go to sleep…my cat would’ve tripped over him had she shown up on the bed.

Hmmm. But the sad thing is, winter is not the place for bunnies outside in my state. And the nice days are waning. I had hoped to get Mim & Pip outdoors this year, but she was having none of it, then the yard overgrew and no-one mowed (pokes husband) so the Bun-Galow is all covered in weeds.

Well, I kind of hope to put Fiver and Mimzy together a little more often and maybe the two of them can get along well in the xpen during the cold months. Then we’ll try outdoors again when it gets nice and SOMEONE MOWS THE YARD. >_>

Aw, a flop on the bed – thats so cute! My bunnies just like to mark my bed as if it is theirs We finally had to get them their OWN dog bed and block them off of ours (that was after about a week of having to wash pee marked sheets every day!)

I wouldn’t worry that you killed his personality – he is probably just adjusting to not having crazy hormones coursing through him all the time. he probably feels much better and not so *crazy* I’m sure that he wil start to develop a new adult personality, and as you get to understand it, I’m sure you will see that he is just as happy, if not happier, than before!

im sure you are right moobunnay its just such a shock to see a huge change in a few short weeks. He has been more cuddly though which is a huge plus because before he used to not really like sitting for pets u know? he wouldnt mind if you petted him but he wasnt going to hang around for long he was happier running around and things, and now he is much more interested in being petted so that is sure one big plus.
Thanks for all your input guys!

Mimzmum – what i do is i put a 4X4 nic grid cube thing together and just put them under (i put a brick on each corner because hopscotch has been able to lift it up on occasion) and then i put a sheet over one corner so they have shade and then i leave them out their for an hour or 2 while i do their complete bunny cage clean out which i do once every other week, however i dont think i will be able to do it for much longer as it is getting colder, shame as i know daxter likes it.

I know. Snow will be here soon….  WAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I took this picture awhile ago. There’s this hill behind our house. And on this hill is this one tree that turns yellow before any others do. The hill is full of yellowish trees now, but this one seems to have it out for me in the month leading to the colder temperatures….while I’m still trying to enjoy my summer….

I call those first trees “The Traitor Trees”…getting cooler here too, but it was a very wet summer….then all of a sudden the last two weeks HOT ( yesterday was 30 c)…but Yes. I also have to remember to get Coco a few more times out in her outdoor pen, because winter in Montreal is LONG.

Coco hasn’t been as affectionate since her spay. But calmer. And she doesn’t pee on my bed anymore.

Oh, no…I was already worried about Robbie’s upcoming neuter, and he’s such a loungey laid-back bun already, if he goes all introverted on me, he’ll be like a statue…!

Grrr…don’t wanna break my park-bunny! He’s not an adolescent…obviously an adult already. Does that make a difference in how they react to a neuter?

I do think that if the bunny is neutered as an adult it will have less of a change on their personality, just because the teenage stage is when bunnies go a little crazy with their hormones, and if you neuter them at that time you will probably see a bigger difference than when they are adults. For my bunnies, I actually did not see all that much of a personality difference, I neutered one as soon as he was old enough so he wasn’t really into the “terrible twos” – and I had a girl spayed as an adult, and both of those didn’t seem to have a big personality change. The girl was mad at me for a couple days because I took her in, but I htink the boy was just glad that I came to pick him back up after the whole ordeal and even flopped on his back as soon as he got home!

Horomones change brain chemistry in two ways; One is the immediate ‘plastic’ effect, that is they are in your blood stream now and they are causing changes now. The other is the long term, ‘aplastic’ effect. That is they change the brain permanently over time.

Since he’s already grown up and had those changes, he’s less likely to change much from the neuter

So I’d definitely agree with Moo, you’ll see less changes then you would with a young bunny.
