i have a 12wk old mini lop rabbit…got him a week ago….the breeder told us to feed him timothy hay and some rabbit food that she gave us and told us to introduce pellets gradually along with veg….he’s not keen on the pellets and he doesn’t appear to be eating hay….we’ve given him some fresh grass from the lawn today because he doesn’t appear to have pooped today…..he loved it….is fresh grass a good substitute for hay…..or can it be harmful???…..Roger is a house rabbit and we don’t allow unlimited rabbit mix/pellets….he’s been introduced to carrot, flat-leaf parsley and broccoli……just need to make sure he’s getting enough fibre…..any suggestions please

I’m not sure about the hay part, as far as when you switch from alfalfa to timothy. I just wanted to ask what kind of pellets your giving him? The rabbit mixes that are sold in pet stores that have the colored pieces in them are more like junk food. The best option is to give them straight pellets. Lots of people here will recommend and speak highly of the Oxbow brand ones, myself included. If he doesn’t like timothy hay, you could try other types too, such as orchard grass or botanical grass. A good hay really, is one that your bun is going to eat a lot of.

I believe that they are supposed to be getting alfalfa hay while they are babies until they are around 7 months old. Here is a good guide to what you should be feeding the little bun http://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Diet

Fresh grass is suitable more for a treat. It doesn’t have the same high fiber content of hay so can’t really be substituted. A bunny that age could be eating a mix of alfalfa and Timothy hay. Have you tried another type of hay? Can you get Orchard Grass Hay? Some buns prefer it as it’s softer.
