Hi everyone, first time poster!  My baby Hunbun is about to outgrow her first store-bought cage, so I am planning a NIC condo now.  Has anyone tried a yoga mat for their flooring?  I think it would be similar to the interlocking squares for kids’ rooms, but are much easier for me to find locally.  The mats also come large enough for my current space (3 cubes long x 2 wide) that one piece would be big enough, and I wouldn’t have to worry as much about her trying to dig at seams.  Hunbun isn’t a chewer so far but she does like to dig so I will put some little blankets in the corners to give her something to dig into.  Can anyone give me advice based on their experience?

Welcome. I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone using those as flooring before. It would be something to try, worst case scenario, it doesn’t work and you just have to figure out something else.

Since you’re going thru the trouble of making a condo, before you start, I want to suggest you go larger than 2×3 grids so it can last longer. 2x 4 or 5 would give her so much more space to move around.

I would just view any item used for flooring as something that will be tasted and possibly ingested. So if a yoga mat is that soft, plastic type stuff, I think I would worry just a bit. I just got some low pile bath rugs, but Sammy already has chewed a couple of holes in it and now I’m not so sure it was a good idea. When in doubt, use the large seagrass mats that you can get online in bunny stores. They are woven from edible hays and fibres, so actually are pretty healthy if ingested. I just built my first habitat instead of the cage I used for years, so started with tiles I got from a cheap store that had adhesive backs and glued down to a big piece of plastic sheet so it made a false floor. Then put the mats and rugs on top.

Beka’s habitat was my inspiration, but check out the section on BB from the Info. bar above on the Habitat samples. Very cool ones pictured.

I agree with Becka and Pam, if you start to see your bun eating it, then it’s time for plan B. The seagrass mats that BB sells here are fantastic for flooring. I use them myself and my rabbits love them. Bun has a rubber mat under her towel, and she has left it alone, although she has tons of toys and seagrass mats to mess with.

i have yoga mats in my room sometimes (im a bit lazy putting them away because i use them so much ) and hershhey loves to sprawl out on it.. and i plan to get some when their new big cage gets here. so id try your bunny with them but if she startss chewing it take it out of her cage. im curious to hear how it goes with your bunnny.
it would be nice consitering my mom wants a sheet of plasic as flooring so weve comprimised and were going to put mats and blankets over top of the plastic.

ah! I was just wondering about this after finding it hard buy rugs online.
I think it’s worth trying and the best way to keep him from eating it would be to make sure the seams arent inside his cage. But that means the shape of the cage is long and narrow and dictated for you.

My apartment has no carpet so a yoga mat might be a good safe space to throw in the middle of the room. If only I could find my spare one =/
