ok so ive been using yesterdays news for baxters litter  since i got him  but its becoming expensive and i know that wood stove pellets are ALOT cheaper than a bag of yesterdays news. so im thinking about switching and i was just wondering ,to anyone that has tried both, how the two littters compare ? odor controll and such. thanks

u could always get a bag of the wood pellets and see which one u like best. some ppl on here have liked yn more. i have to say the wood pellets are my favorite though. i use the horse stall pine pellets, equine fresh. i only have to use one layer, barely covering the bottom of the pan, and i spray with a little water to make them a little softer. most times i can just dump the poop in the garbage and put the litter box back in the cage without needing to change the pellets. they absorb tons of pee and stay dry. petzy did a litter test with absorbancy of different litters right under your post. im not sure if there is a difference as far as odor control with horse stall pellets and wood stove pellets, but my horse stall pellets are great.

I have switched over to wood pellets because they are cheaper. I find that they do not control the smell as well as YN (there tends to be a mild pine mixed with pee smell) but I can only smell it the day I change the box, so I live with it. If my bun’s litter box was in my bedroom, I might be less likely to deal with the slight extra aroma, but it’s in my dining room far away from where I sit on a daily basis. As long as I can’t smell it 10ft away, I don’t really care.

eta: For one small bunny, I only change the box every 3-4 days.

I find that I prefer wood stove pellets, they are cheaper and I find that I like that pine smell, it helps cover the pee smell. I actually find it to be the same as yesterday’s news odor-control-wise. My bunnies are in my bedroom and the smell is not noticeable unless I stick my face in the box or if I am cleaning it.

The thing I don’t like about wood stove pellets is that they turn to saw dust when wet and so it gets tracked everywhere. What I have been doing is putting it on the bottom and using yesterday’s news (I use Good Mews, same thing but cheeper) to cover up the wsp.

I use the wood stove pellets in both of my buns cages right next to my bed. I only notice a slight wood smell when I put fresh litter in, but once you get used to it, it really isn’t that noticeable. Also it helps to leave my door open all day with a baby gate in place so the air can circulate.

I use WSP and I love them. I recently posted that I spent $50 (with tax!) on litter for two buns for an ENTIRE YEAR! I think the odor control is absolutely fine. I used to use Cell-Sorb which is a recycled paper litter, and I think the odor control is better with WSP. Even if it’s not and you have to change the box more frequently… it’s so cheap that you are still saving money.

Oh yea the tracking the sawdust around was a bit of a problem, but I put a grid over my litter now so it is no longer a problem I used lighting diffuser to make a grid – very useful.

so, this might sound silly, but where the heck do you buy wood stove pellets?? what sort of store carries that? i’m not even sure what they are but i kinda want to try them.. yesterday’s news is rather expensive and i can’t even buy it where i live. have to drive 35 miles to get it. =\

Generally feed stores will care wood stove pellets or pelleted pine horse bedding (same thing, just different packaging). You can also get wood stove pellets at most hardware stores.

It does kind of depend on where you live and the time of year. You’re not going to find WSP in the middle of summer, and you probably won’t find them at all in the deep south (this is where the horse bedding is especially useful). I’m planning to stock up on WSP for the rest of the year before the weather warms up.

i just want to add that i put a little hay on top of my pellets and it helps keep the sawdust inside the box. i haven’t had a problem with tracking. now if i could find a way to keep the hay contained!
