Another great litter is wood stove pellets.  They are super cheap $8 for 40 lbs.

yeah, there is only one kind of yesterdays news available in the store i go to.  it’s the cat one.  i would guess that the difference may just be pellet size?

knowltons… where do you get the wood stove pellets from?  are they sold with litter?  i’ve never come across  them (tho i haven’t made a point to look either) but would love to try them out.  the price factor is appealing.

either yesterday’s news is fine. the small pet is probably more because it’s for a “specialty” pet, or something like that. whichever you want is fine to use. with buns you have to try to save money where you can b/c greens and everything else really adds up. i use off-brand pressed paper pellets. i think a large 40 lb bag is maybe 15-18 bucks. it takes me a few months to go thru it. but that’s with only one litterbox (b/c Mead only will use one litterbox.)

As far as we can tell, the version for cats and the version for “small animals” are identical, except for price. The latter is quite a bit more expensive per unit weight. If you use Yesterday’s News, as we do, just buy the big cat bags. We only buy the unscented version. A 30 lb. bag runs us about $15, and lasts approximately 4-5 weeks with the four bunnies and assorted in-enclosure and out-of-enclosure litterboxes.

The cats get clumping bentonite clay litter.  We haven’t tried Yesterdays News on the cats and are kind of afraid to, given what 3 cats can do to their litterbox in the utility room!   Bunnies aren’t allowed down there.  Besides, the clay litter is cheaper.  Anyone have any thoughts on Yesterdays News with cats?

We’d like to switch to wood stove pellets, because they really are cheaper, but just haven’t gotten around to it.

carefresh is very expensive here, a tiny bag which lasts about 2 weeks max is £5 (about $10) but i wouldnt think there is a huge difference, could u try a small bag first? see if your bun likes it

Yesterday’s News for cats is what I used to get, just be sure to steer clear of the scented one, it isn’t good for rabbits. I switched to Aspen Supreme for more odor control and it works great, also a mixture of 1/2 YN (Yesterday’s News) and 1/2 Aspen Supreme works well too – in fact that is what Binky Bunny uses. Just be sure to make any switches slowly. Some rabbits will stress if anything changes too much at one time like pellets and even litter.

As far as I know, the only difference between the Yesterday’s News for small animals (they also market a rabbit specific brand) and the cat version is the size of the pellets and the size of the bags.  The small animal stuff is available in smaller bags and is quite a bit more expensive.  Go with the cat one, it will be fine for your bunnies.  Critter Country/Cat Country is the same way.  More or less the same product, wth different packaging for cats and small animals.  At least around here, the Cat Country and the Critter Country are the same price per pound for same sized sacks.

As to wood stove pellets, you can usually find them in the fall and early winter in hardware stores.  They are very inexpensive, something like $8 for a 40 pound bag.  The pellets are quite a bit larger than litter pellets, you may want to give the bunnies some straw or hay to keep their feet off of the pellets.  There are also wood based horse stall products that are similar, that can sometimes be found in feed stores.
