So I know I’ve been talking about putting our bun in the basement (after we get it all cleaned up) but he seemed to be getting aggressive when you’d clean his cage and always wanted out.  So we went out to bed bath and beyond and bought some cubes and got mats at sams club.  We spent most of the night building his cage….a few weeks later we changed it a bit and took out his little cage (that had his litter, hay and water in) and added more to the second story.  He LOVES it!  When we first built it and he got in, he binkied all over the place he was so happy!  He loves his cottage so we put it in his cage and my husband made a ramp since he was hesitant in jumping up.  We ended up changing it around when we came back home from being all the entire day to find he chewed up those mats…thank goodness we had extra linolium!  We ended up changing the cage around and putting the new flooring down.  I want to find a new litter box and hay rack for him because he doesn’t like the rack that he has to sit up for the hay (he won’t eat that much from it) and I put it in his litter box but he’ll stick his butt out while eating the hay and end up poopin’ on the floor.

I think he has a good setup now compared to the small cage he had.  Although I’m not totallly thrilled that he now owns my office   But at least I can work in there while he’s in his cage without him getting angry to get out.

Wow, that is super cool…………inspires me to make one for my Lily girl When we’re not home, my bun is in a cage this size. I know she’d love more space. How much did you spend on all the cubes?

I will see if I can talk the hubby into helping me with this project!

I used those cube grides and bought those at Bed Bath and Beyond (where they have all the baskets and storage stuff) for $16.  They have them at Target (I think at walmart too) but they’re about $25.  We bought 4 of them and used 3 of them but had to use the connectors in the 4th box.  We did buy those play mats for kids that look like a big puzzle but it’s rubberish and he loooved digging and chewing at it, so had to put something on top of that.  You can buy linolium at Home Depot (or lowes).  I got…I think 6’x8′ piece for $20.  I ended up putting it on top of the mats…makes the floor softer too and the mats were about $20 I think.

Yeah leaving him alone the whole day in that small cage…litter would be everywhere   He’s only dug once in his litter since we built his new cage.

Thanks for the good info! I know Lily would be envious of your bun’s new set-up! She’s been wanting a bigger house too!

Off to Bed, Bath and Beyond this week! Hubby will probably like assembling her new pad….I hope he will because I’m recruiting him!

Your welcome!   Oh I forgot one thing!  Don’t forget to get zip ties.  At first we didn’t have them and everytime I climbed over it to clean it up, one after another would start to come undone.  So next day we bought those and they helped a lot, make it a lot more sturdier.  I’m not sure what other people use for a “door” for them to get in and out but I used the top of our smaller cage; it opened at the side and top, so we took the top off and zip tied it onto the big cage and used a clip to hold it up when he’s out.  Unless you can just zip tie a grid and use some kind of clasp so it can swing out?  Good luck!

Thanks for the zip tie reminder. I wouldn’t have thought about using those. I bet it helps a lot with the stability.

I’m excited to make this! Little Lily- you’re moving on up in the bun world! hehe

Lily and I both thank you

He always would move his cottage around and we didnt’ want him trying to jump out of the cage and he was hesitant of jumping to the second floor so my husband made that ramp from the second story of the cottage to the second level of his cage.  He got one of the grids and zip tied it to the other grid and made 2 holes in the cottage (the part that sticks out) and zip tied the ramp to it.  I put some of the linolium on the ramp and he was sliding down it haha!  So I put one of his grass mats on top of that and it worked a lot better.

Oh I can’t even get him out of it sometimes! Well I think he was mad at me balancing my checkbook and organizing the office while he was stuck in his cage (he was thumping) and refused to leave his cage until I gave him a treat. But before it was so hard to get him back in his cage and now he’ll hop in there no problem!
