So my baby bun (7.5 wks) is currently living in her pet store cage (I know, it’s terrible – hence the post).  After feeling massively guilty that she’s cooped up all day today because I’ve been at school studying (med student), I want to get her an X-pen so that she can at least roam a little bit when I’m gone for a long time.  I do let her run free for a couple of hours each day (it varies depending on the day how much free roaming she gets – and we’re still litter training).

Anyway, so she’s quite tiny and as a dwarf, won’t get too big anyway.  How high of an X-pen should I get?  I’ve found pens on ebay for 24”, 30”, and 36” so I’m wondering which is the best.  She really hasn’t shown any indication of mad hopping skills, but I have no idea what her teenage and adult years may bring.

And as neat as the NIC bunny condos are, I do not have the time to put one of those suckers together, nor the time to clean them, hence we’re going for the simplicity of the X-pen.

        Thanks!

I’d go for the 36″ ones, honestly. Monkey, all of 1.5 lbs, can leap well over the 24″ high ones. Moose, my 4lb boy has been known to jump over even the tallest if he sees something to jump to.

I love xpens much more than NIC condos. They are simple, portable, and incredibly easy to clean. I would not get anything shorter than the 36 inch. Buns are not going to reach their full jumping capability until later on. People will initially try to save the $10 or $15 and get the shorter one, but then end up having to buy an entirely new pen when bunny learns to hop over!

I have a 24″ x-pen and both of my dwarf bunnies can hop over it if they really want to. I ended up having to use some panels to make a cover for it. I’d go for a taller one unless you want a cover.

36 inch definitely. My mini needs a roof because he jumps out of…everything. I get afraid that he’s going to hurt himself sometimes so I have to cover the top, so be safe! Your rabbit may surprise you!

You are going to love the x-pen – yes, taller is better. I always just open the whole panel up where the clasps are to clean too which is so easy.

I have a 24 inch one for my dwarf and holland lop. I like it because it doesn’t look like some massive cage! I went to Home Dept and got a roll of screen (like for screen doors or windows) and covered the top of it. It’s held on by zip ties. It still allows light in there, so it isn’t cave like. BUT you have to take your time doing it… I had to re cut twice because it would sag in the middle and was not… “aesthetically pleasing”. Really, it ended up being the same cost as just getting a 36 inch x pen, but I like being able to see over the cage.

And I agree with everyone else, the xpen is the way to go! My boys love it. They were in separate pet store cages for a few months before I could house them together and every night they would rattle on the cage and make so much noise. They are SO happy in an xpen. They hang out there most of the time anyways, even though their door is almost always open.

The problem with a top on it is that it makes it harder for you to go in and clean it, or to hang out with them in it I love my 36″ ones!

I bought a 30 inch one. But I’m also ok with buying a 36in when the time comes, if need be.
