I was just about to be done with cleaning bunny pens last night and WHOA…Mimzy left a pile of bb’s in his box that could’ve knocked over a horse.

I was a little worried about it, because normally his fecals don’t smell like anything but hay, but then Fiver did the same thing.

They weren’t cecotrophes, they were fully formed fecal pellets, but very dark and very smelly.

Does anyone else notice the smell/color of their bunnies’ droppings changing depending on what type of hay you use? I’m thinking it’s because they’re going back to the 3rd cut timmy hay again and, like when I give them orchard grass, it tends to turn their stools darker…however I’ve not ever noticed such a rank smell to them before this.

I was also wondering if it was from probiotics, which they’re both having, but I would think I’d have had more smell earlier on in their therapy.

What would cause this? It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with their tummies again, right? Seems to me I read something about smelly fecals in another thread onboard, but I don’t remember what it was called or what the answer was.

Either way, they are still eating and going to the bathroom well, so I’m hoping it was a one time thing…otherwise I’m going to get a rather rude awakening one of these nights…lol.

I thin that changing hay could have something to do with it… there is a pretty decent fiber difference.  No new or different treats or veggies?

Also, probiotics are meant to balance out the stomach so it should make it more formed and better.  Maybe you could mix hays for awhile and wean them onto the new one?

I would imagine the new hay and the probiotics combo is responsible for the change. Especially since they are both on both.

But my gut (pardon the pun) tells me that it’s a good sign, not bad. It may be that both are working to cure them and it’s possible that it may be cleaning out their systems of the last of any problems. Sort of like Metamucil. Just The end of the internal ick. See if it continues or if they are both noticeably better after this. I’m betting on the latter.

what is the probiotics? I’ve heard of it and I can’t remember what it is exactly.

Probiotics (Proviable or Benebac) are medicines that assist in keeping gut flora normal in the rabbit (or other animals whose digestive systems become compromised by antibiotics or illness).
It’s started mellowing out a little now. I didn’t give Mimz his probiotic last night because it was way late and he seemed to be doing well and it’s been about a week since we finished the antibiotics. They all got a little piece of radicchio today too, something they haven’t had in awhile. They all seemed to enjoy it.
Definitely the third cut timmy and orchard grass makes their droppings darker and sometimes smellier. I’m just so used to them not really carrying any odor at all.
As we get back into using the 2nd or 1st cuts in the summer, I imagine this will stop. Wintertime foods do seem to affect them this way if I remember right.
This reminds me, Fiver gets his last tube of Benebac tonight. He’s been so good about just lapping it right up, I think he’s going to miss it!

I haven’t noticed a change in smell with change of hay for mine. I wonder if it could be Mimz digestive tract getting back to normal after all of the meds and changes and leaving behind some icky stuff. Is he eating more now that his teeth are in better shape (hopefully).

Jack’s poos get more smelly when he is trying to boss Viv around or let her know he loves her (his nightly ritual) and so he leaves his “love and territorial” scent on his poos.

Stinky poos for ‘romance’? 0_o Yikes on toast! I think I need to let him spend some snuggle time with his stunt bunny again!
Maybe he’s trying to tell me he misses having Reglan and Proviable syringed into his mouth at night? lol…..(since I’ve been doing taxes I’ve not had as much time to spend with him, but that should ease up in a few days as I get that stuff sent off)
They were pretty bad again last night, but he did have some radicchio in the last day or so, I think I’m chalking it up to different foods. But I’ll keep that ‘territory’ thing in mind. Today he was digging at his pen door when I wasn’t up with the sun like he was, so I would guess he’s a little frustrated with me at the moment.
I’ve been working till late on my bookkeeping though, so I’m not getting to sleep now till about 4 AM…~_o zzzzz………I’ll be so glad when tax time is over!!

Bite your tongue!  Don’t let Jack hear you say that. LOL.

Jack seems to think it’s as good as “Old Spice for Men”.   Jack’s personality makes me think of the guy from the commercial that says,  ”Look at me, now look at your man, now look back at me….unfortunately, your man is not me, but now he can smell like me.”      Jack really thinks he is something special, and  he can’t understand why Vivian won’t swoon under his advances and sweet poo messages.

Mimzmum – you could test out the food theory by feeding only certain kinds for a few days each and see if you can spot a difference.  His poos look the same right?  Just smell differently.

                        ETA:  I’m on a horse.

ROFLMAO! OMG, I DESPISE those commercials! They were funny at first, now they just bug the heck out of me! lolz!
Yes, BB, the size and amount of Mimzy’s poos are still good, just the scent has changed. I was wondering if it was just that he was eating stuff that made him more ‘gassy’…but he’s not needing simethicone at all, so… ?
It’s got to be the foods. I mean, it’s like asparagus, you know? I think some of us were discussing that a few weeks ago on the board somewhere.

BB, what do you mean, “ETA, I’m on a horse”?
I know ETA is estimated time of arrival, but on a horse to where? Seeing MM?

The old expression, “I have to see a man about a horse” as a euphamism for going to the bathroom?
                            Love me, love my poo?

                            I’m so confused.

Pam, BB is referring to this new commercial on telly for Old Spice aftershave. It’s got this obnoxious guy talking about himself (mostly) and about he aftershave and throwing all sorts of random stuff in with it. At the end, he’s on a beach riding a white horse and states such. It’s laughable the first time you see it, then it gets annoying…lol.
The new commercial that my daughter and I like the most right now is the one for the car (don’t know the make of it) where people are calling out the color of it as it passes and punching someone nearby…at the end it’s Stevie Wonder calling out “Red one” and punching the actor from that new “Cop Out” movie (I think) and the guy yells at him, “HOW are you doing that??” It ends with him waving his hand in front of Stevie’s eyes.
The reason I bring it up is it seems to be playing in tandem with the Old Spice commercial.

Thanks. I get it. Which is why obnoxious men always smell. LOL I like the Stevie Wonder ocmmercial too.

And speaking of PU, last night I was writing here and Sammy was in her basket next to me and all of a sudden PHEW! Immediately her head pokes out, looking kind of dazed, and she exits the basket. I think she pooped just a couple of smelly cecals in her sleep. I offered them to her before I threw them into the litter pan, but she didn’t eat them. We both headed for her cage and the litter pan. I am pretty sure it was the Kale this week. This morning she was VERY aggressive and attacking me for not letting her into my bedroom, and barely let me touch her. I am thinking she may have a touch of gas and be cranky from it. So it’s just romaine lettuce and lots of hay this morning, and a break from the kale.

I think kale should only be given once a week if you need to offer it at all. It is a pretty gassy veggie. I think Romaine can be gas producing also…or calcium, I forgot which.
I just hate how much you have to buy and how much of it goes to waste. I had some recipes for it but have lost them.
Better feeling tummy vibes for dear Sammykins! (((((((((((((((vibes)))))))))))))))

As far as ETA  – I use it in the forums to mean  “Edited to Add”

For some reason i love the commercial and I could watch it a million times and I don’t get annoyed.  Something must be wrong with me.

Nah, BB, you just don’t have the teenage daughter dissing everything that drives her crazy. (count yourself lucky…lol) I get cranky just hearing her complain. ^_^
