i just read a post saying that rabbits should only have a small piece of carrot only a few times a week. Boston loves carrots and especially since she’s been sick we give her as much as she will eat b/c it means she’s eating. I’m talking like 5-10 baby carrots a day. Did I really mess up b/c of this? I’m going to stop doing that obviously, but I just want to make sure all those carrots didn’t hurt her in some way.

That’s definitely too many carrots under normal circumstances. Is she not eating other foods?
Carrots wont her your bun. It should be a treat since it’s high in sugar. It’s like letting your kid eat chocolate bars for dinner instead of homemade meal.

I’ve made the same mistake with my bun before I came on here. I was feeding her somewhere around 5 baby carrots a day, sometimes even apple too. Once I gave Flopsy a whole apple!! YIKES!!  I gues I’m lucky that she didn’t get poopy bum or anything! Not even diarhea! But after coming on here I save the apples and carrots as treats, sometimes she doesn’t even get one a day!! If she knew it was because of BinkyBunny website she’d probably bite my ankles everytime I came near the computer!! I think she liked her treats as a meal!! LOL

OH! and I would like to add that she only gets a sliver of apple as a treat! Not the whole thing!

Oh yes that’s very bad to give her so many carrots. We are talking a sliver 3 times a week max.  Can you find an herb or a green to give her as a treat?  Something you don’t give her with the rest of the greens?

Don’t worry, there shouldn’t be any long term troubles with the overcarroting.

Yes, don’t worry about this is the long term, you are correcting it and that is the important thing.

oh sweetie! you have so much to deal with right now with poor Boston being sick. please don’t beat yourself up over this. you are doing everything you can to make sure she gets better… and you are learning which is so important. we all started out at a place of NO knowledge and we’ve improved upon that… begin to correct it and try and find some yummy substitutes that are healthier.

yup no worries! Sometimes we love and then overfeed!! Is that the only thing she’s eating? I know you want to give her treats, to make her feel better. How bout a bunch of parsley and some nice spring mix?

Well its no wonder she wanted carrots more than romaine!! All that sugar! Yep, she’s eating lots of hay everyday too and usually about a cup of romiane plus the baby food (till we get the critical care from oxbow).

Thanks! I’m glad I know and I re-looked at the list of safe veggies now…who woulda thought carrots were bad?! I mean, look at Bugs!

Nobody is perfect. We have all made mistakes and the best we can do is correct ourselves and not make those mistakes again. That’s why I am so very grateful that this forum (and other pet forums) were created, that someone takes the time to manage this forum and that people are on here to give each other advice. Sometimes, it’s just good to hear encouraging words from more than one person. So even if postings sound similar and basically have the same content, it does good to read other people agree/disagree.
I hope the very best for your bunny and be strong!
Have you tried a piece of broccoli here and there? Or a blueberry every once in a while? Dried papaya cubes (the HRS store here sells those), a tiny slice of banana, strawberry tops? A dandelion here and there? What else can I think of… Hum…

                            Healing thoughts to your Boston!

I think we’re all always learning! As long as Boston isn’t showing signs of illness, it should be ok. I would just wean Boston down to 1 or 2 a day – but wouldn’t offer any additional treats.

Thanks everyone!!! I’m now using a piece of carrot to coax Boston to her cage at night and since she doesnt get them all the time, it excites her. Plus she’s getting super fast again and hard to catch!

Before I started researching buns properly I was giving Freddy mixed feed with big corn pieces in it…gasp! horror!
Welcome to mummy guilt. It is neverending.

I too was a carrotaholic!  She loved carrots so much that I was giving her several a day.  I also gave her nuts as treats.  My problem was very psychological….Jessi only seemed to like me when I gave her treats so I went overboard!  She got pretty chunky, but lost weight once I stopped w/ all the treats.  However, since her spay she’s gotten kinda chunky again.  I keep saying it’s b/c Leo “likes big butts and he cannot lie”!
