So, last Friday I took Dharma to a rabbit specialist here in Houston to talk about spaying her since she seems to have regressed on her litter training while running around loose with us. (Still doing great in her pen)

The doctor went ahead and got some urine and blood to do some labs while we were there. 

Well, last night she called me and Dharma has a pretty significant bladder infection! She has been in pain and this is also why she seems to have regressed in her litter training. I was in tears to think my little one has been in pain for possibly weeks and I did not know! 

After knowing she has an infection I could then see that maybe there were some signs, but with her being an older rescue rabbit (and me a less than 1 year rabbit mom) I just did not snap. 🙁

She is on metacam now for pain and an antibiotic (Trimeth Sulfa) and I hope that gets her feeling better fast.

On a positive note, dosing her with the Metacam last night went pretty smoothly.

Ah, don’t feel badly! Rabbits are masters at hiding pain. I’ve had them in my life 10 yrs now and I still cannot always detect when something is off.

It sounds like Dharma was still hopping around the house as usual, the only clue being the loss of litter habits. So you did the right thing getting that looked into.

I’ve had mine develop cystitis before and it was seeing some blood that was my 1st clue. They acted normal otherwise.

Hopefully all is cleared up soon. It really is a good thing this was found and can be sorted before her spay.

Thanks jerseygirl – I agree about the “it’s only a rabbit” comment – we are quite attached to our little girl!
One of the nice things about our visit to the specialist – she got a new haircut around her rump and it is so cute! And she is not dragging litter with her wherever she goes, which cuts down on her and my cleaning…
