Hi everyone. God forbid we enter into any further serious world crisis and are unable to get fresh greens for our buns, what is the next best thing we can keep on hand for them that doesn’t require refrigeration? I have lots of hay and pellets and treats…

        Thank you for any guidance.

Honestly if they have hay and pellets, they will likely be fine. Good quality pellets are designed to fill in the gaps in nutrition, so I would not worry. Vegetables act as a nice enrichment and variety and that diversity is nice for rabbits and I believe helps their GI health in general, but pellets and hay should hit what is required.

I agree with Wick! Hay and clean water are the most important, and pellets will address any other needs.

You can find some dried veggies and herbs online that would be a nice enrichment, but for an emergency kit I don’t think they are necessary.

There was a nice thread recently on what people like to keep in their emergency/evacuation kits for buns:

What’s in your bunny doomsday bag?

              And an older thread:

What’s in your bunny evacuation kit?

I agree. When it comes to emergencies, hay and pellets are all you need.

I’m right there with you with the planning, I recently got jugs to store 30 gallons of emergency water. Our house is on a well, so if the power goes out for any length of time we won’t have water!

Oh my…glad you found the jugs! I hope none of us ever have to use our preparedness stashes but it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry. ✨

I’ve got basically an entire greens garden growing for my boys right now. When everything went down the first time the stores were out of everything for months. If it is winter I bought a few grow tents to keep everything growing indoors. I have lots and lots of dried herbs and things like bananas, strawberries, etc. I stocked up on hay (I couldn’t find it anywhere in May-October last year), pellets I had no issue.

                        I am prepared this time.

Last spring I was really prepping my veggie garden for hard times to come. Then we had the coldest July in 150 years or so, so most of my vegs refused to grow. I had 40 zucchini plants, got 5 zucchini, they were hard as wood because of really slow growth. 🤣

We’ve eaten all the chocolate in our covid box. In the beginning we dutifully replaced it, but then we stopped. What I do do, however, is keep a well-stocked medicin/first aid drawer, for both human and pet needs.

Regarding buns, as long as there is clean water and hay, there is life, though it might be wise to get some Critical Care and store it in the freezer. We actually had a CC shortage last year and I had to grind pellets for my bun. Grinding pellets is surprisingly hard work.

Ooh good call on the CC Bam. I heard about that critical care shortage.

And wow Sonn! That’s really impressive!  I’ve never been able to grow enough of things to make them useful for the buns, except one year when we planted WAY too much kale and chard. But then the buns can’t have that much kale or chard, so it wasn’t really that helpful!

You can pick fresh grass, clover, and dandelions, as long as it hasn’t been sprayed
