The website addresses horses eating the litter:

My buns have never eaten any of their litter, plus I have a grate over top of it now, so they wouldn’t be able to get to it anyway. But yeah, I can see how that could be concerning since our critters are a lot smaller than horses.

I don’t use it but I know someone who uses something very similar. It’s cheap, comes in HUGE bags and works really well. I didn’t like it cause I felt that my stuff gives better odour control and feels better on my babies feet but I know shes never had any problems with it and her bunnies are perfect

What litter do you use? I use yesterday’s news but I find it a bit too expensive.

i use the shop brand of yesterdays news. It costs about A$8 for 15 litres (which lasta a week. It’s probably expensive and I’m sure I can get it cheaper bulk but I’m only little LOL and have trouble carrying anything heavier.

Actually one other thing with her litter, I think it has a slight smell…but I have a super strong sense of smell so no one else could smell it except me.

I’d never really looked into it cuz it sounded odd – but holy cheap!

If that’s what they are, then I’ll definitely be giving them a go the next time I run low on litter.

I guess I always just pictured blocks of wood, kinda like my boyfriend uses in his smoker…and I was wondering to myself “how would that possibly absorb anything? These people are crazy.”   But now I understand.  This is cause for great excitement!    I can’t wait to save piles of money!

I’ve been the biggest proponent of Feline Pine for ages here, but I was able to find those wood stove pellets for the first time recently and they are great too.

The pellets are a little larger than those in Feline pine, and there is no pine smell.  I put in a little FP in on top the first time in case it smelled dfferent to her, but she couldn’t care less. 

I got a 40 lb bag at Menards for $4.99, so I’ll try another trip or two before spring to stock up.

the cool thing about woodstove pellets and things similar to that is that even if it’s not the best as far as odor control, since it’s so darn cheap you can empty the box every day and not waste a lot of money. i know with more expensive litters you might be tempted to try and “get another day out of it”… with something so cheap, it doesn’t matter. i might try again to do a search for WSP… for some reason my husband is totally against me getting them… and i spend crazy money on litter every month…

They also recommend it for small animals… I don’t see why it wouldn’t be safe. (The fact that they mentioned pine and cedar being unsafe makes me feel good about it since it’s a wood product.) I’d only worry about the dustiness of it…

Okay – so I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I am SO excited about the wood stove pellets I just bought!  I got a 40lb bag for $5.00 from Lowes, and was quite curious to see if they were all they were hyped up to be ( I was more than a little skeptical that something made of wood would be able to soak up very much liquid, but thought it was worth my $5 to try).

So – I got two little bowls out and put 2oz of water in each.  Then I put 1.5 tablespoons of Yesterday’s News (my usual litter) in the first one.  Right away it starts soaking up water, which does little to shock or impress me since I know this stuff works pretty well.  So I go rip open my bag of wood pellets, scoop 1.5 tablespoons out into the other dish of water, and they sink like rocks to the bottom.  I shake the bowl, nothing happens.  I’m quite sad and more than a little disappointed.  So I go start unpacking the rest of my purchases in another room and when I get back into the kitchen – POOF – the wood pellets have puffed all up like a bowl of popcorn – aboslutely no water left in the dish at all.  The YN meanwhile was still sogging around in a bit of water at the bottom and starting to look a little sad and dissolvey (new word).  So then I rejoiced and celebrated, although no one else is home to share in the joy.

I just went and checked again (probably 10 minutes or more since my period of elation) and the YN has caught up and all of its water is now gone as well.  BUT, the stove pellets are still a lot cheaper (the YN here is $20 for 30lbs, so quite a difference).  So I don’t know how they are for odour control yet, but I usually change the litterbox every day anyway, so I doubt that will be a huge problem for me.

So my next question is: do they sell these things year round, or will I need to stock up on them before winter’s over?

i think they are very hard (impossible?) to come by in the warmer months… so you might want to figure out how much you go thru during the next couple months and then stock up on what you’ll need for the spring, summer and early fall… do you have someplace dry to keep a few bags?

Haha – yes, I am a bit obsessed! I’ll definitely need to stock up. We have a storage closet in the basement and some other storage space in the apartment, so we should be able to find somewhere to put them. I’m sure the bf will be pleased. 😉 I might check with someone at the stores just to see if they completely stop stocking them in the summer or if I’ll just have to be diligent in my search for them.

my husband is dead set against us using WSP… the closest place i’ve found that has them is about 30 minutes away, which is really not a big deal. but if i went, i’d be wanting to buy like 6 or more bags so i didn’t have to make the trip often. from my rough calculation, i could save approx. 200 bucks a year, but no. he’s not interested. i think he’s worried about storage and haivng ten bags of litter in our dining room.

Woo hoo, I can get woody pet in my corner of the world. I use very litter so I wonder how long I can make one bag last…? Another experiment may have just began!  BunnyMuffin, Woody Pet may be interested to put your experiment results in their testimonial section! lol

Question though…Does anyone know environmental impact of producing this type of product. I know some wood pellets are made from by-product from timber mills and are just compressed into pellets using steam (I think).  I don’t really want to buy a product that is high energy to manufacture etc

Hi It has been a while since I posted, but I wanted to let you know that I have used Woody Pellets for quite some time. I live in Connecticut and getting wood stove pellets can be tricky. In the summer few places sell them and in the winter they are never in stock – especially on days like today when we get 8-12 inches of snow! A friend told me about the Woody Pellets and I gave them a try. They are a bit cheaper than the stove pellets and I can always get them at a local hardware store. They are always in stock as there is an all girls’ school in town that has a barn and he stocks them for the school all year. They are a little less dense than stove pellets, but work great on absorption and odor control. I recommend them althhough when I can I feel the more compact stove pellets work better for my buns. The Woody Pellets turn into sawdust when wet and the stove pellets seem to hold their shape. The Woody pellets have been checked by many vets and my rescue group recommends them and calls them safe for buns and small animals. (Our hamster hated them – too big!) I recommend trying them – for $5 its worth it. Each bun is different and each has its own prefernce for litter.
