Does anyone have a brand of wood stove pellets that they recommend to use as litter? I thought I’d found a brand that advertised as safe for animal litter but turns out none of the stores near me carry them. Also, do I need to find ones that say safe for animals or just a brand that doesn’t add anything like accelerants? Some bags say not for animal consumption but is the company just trying to protect itself from a lawsuit or should I definitely avoid those brands? I live in Canada by the way and I know that a lot of people recommend getting horse bedding but I’m not sure where I could get those here. I figured wood stove pellets would be the easier option.

I get mine at tractor supply. I think you can sometimes get them at Home Depot also. I don’t think they have to say safe for rabbits. They have to be safe to burn in a wood stove so they shouldn’t have any added fragrence or anything. If it says the kind of wood it is made out of you can look up if that kind of wood is safe for rabbits and you’ll know for sure.

I use Tractor Supply brand horse pellets. They’re kiln-dried pine so they’re safe for bunnies and kitties and absorb odor well. I tried a bag of hardwood stove pellets from Home Depot but they didn’t handle the odor as well. I would stay away from wood pellets advertised as cat litter just because they’re more expensive.

I don’t have a tractor supply store where I live. I’ve been googling and looking for horse stores around here and none seem to sell pellet bedding, which is why I’m trying to find wood stove pellets. I wish they weren’t so hard to find.

I asked our Canadian member Q8 about wood stove pellets in Canada. She says any hardware store like Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Rona, Lowes, Ace Hardware, Tru Value as well as farm stores like TSC.

The content of the pellets should only be compressed sawdust, no added accelerants or scents. basically all wood that go in wood pellets is safe, it’s kiln dried so pine and spruce works fine. It rarely says what wood the pellets are made of, where I live it’s mostly pine and spruce because that’s what grows here.

I have started mixing some canawick pellets in with his other litter to get him used to them, and they seem to do a pretty good job so far. Do you guys use just the wood pellets or do you put soft litter on top? I don’t want them to be too hard on his feet

I put a fluffy layer of hay on top of them.
