You need to get untreated, which means no chemicals added such as accellerant.

If you want to cut costs, but use a safe wood stove pellet, I actually would recommend a large bag of Feline Pine. It’s wood pellets that have been processed to be litter so is considered safer than other wood stove pellets that are not as guaranteed, and it comes in very inexpensive bags at grocery stores or petstores. I think you’ll find it cheap enough to make a difference, easy to get more if it’s at the market, but safer than an unknown wsp product. You don’t need to buy the ones made for small animals, the bag for cats is just as good. Just don’t get clumping or scented if they make a choice.

When I was looking for them, I found that the only differences were the type of wood – hard or soft. We ended up getting hard wood because it was all they had last time and it seems to work as well as the pine (soft wood).

Make sure it has no accellerants, but I honestly didn’t see any that did have accellerants. Since wood stove pellets are meant to burn slowly, in general they should just be plain wood.

You can also look for horse bedding made of wood stove pellets. It’s the same thing, but you’ll know it’s safe.

I use Feline Pine and it works wonders. No odours, absorbs amazingly well, and litter rarely finds its way outside the litter pan. For a medium bag from Petsmart it was about $13.00. Prices may be different where you are. However, I also own horses and use the same type of pellets in their stalls. If you have a feed supply store around you it is probably much cheaper to buy the big bags from them.

we bought some wood stove pellets they were $3 dollars, but the bag said not for pet use. is that bad then? i am trying them for the first time today i will see how they go. feline pine is WAY more expensive then wood stove pellets, that’s what i used before. and our feed store doesn’t sell medium or large bags of it.

Did the bag say anything else?

Yeah, read off anything else interesting on the bag. They may have written “not for use with animals” just as a precaution, so that people couldn’t sue them because something went wrong with their pets. That doesn’t mean they’re not the same as all other wood pellets.

Also, they might have tighter controls on the pellets they make for animal use (since the same factories will make wood stove pellets and horse stall pellets). It could be that the quality control standards for wood stove pellets just aren’t as high. Still doesn’t mean they’re not ok, just that the company is able to be more lax with them if they tell people not to use them with animals.

Mine said not for animal consumption. I think they said that because people might mistake it for dog food or something and feed it to their animals. As long as it is accelerant free and the bunnies are not eating it like a feast then it is probably fine. I have a grid over my litter so my bunnies don’t munch on their litter. You could get the grid from binky bunny to prevent your buns from eating the litter.

well we decided we liked the feline pine better so we are going to go back to that after this bag.
